A Derby man has been left broken after his grandad's false metal knee was not returned to him by a national cremation service and was instead recycled.
Adam Minto's grandad, 85-year-old Terence Gosling of Chaddesden, died in May - just three months after receiving a shock bowel cancer diagnosis.
Terence's metal knee, which was fitted at the age of 25, was a long-running joke between the pair and it had always been joked that Mr Minto would "make a few quid one day" when his grandad died.
Talk of a sale was all in jest though, but when it came to organising Terence's direct cremation, Mr Minto requested Pure Cremation to have the knee returned to the family for the sake of keeping the sentimental item.
But Pure Cremation, which was set up in 2015, did not return the knee when Terence's ashes were brought home last week and had in fact recycled it without permission.
It's a move which Mr Minto has described as "deeply upsetting".
In an email sent to Mr Minto and seen by DerbyshireLive, Pure Cremation said the mistake was down to "human error" and had since offered him £500 compensation - an offer he has turned down.
He says no amount of money can replace what has been lost, claiming the money offer itself was a "kick in the teeth" as the overall service cost the family more than £3,000.
"I couldn't believe it when they told me," said Mr Minto. "If I'm being honest, I broke down and cried right there on the phone.
"I should have been able to rest last week when the ashes were returned, but I've had nothing but stress since.
"I just don't think people understand my situation and they've only started taking me seriously once they realised I wasn't going to let this go, but £500 feels like an insult to me. It's a kick in the teeth."
Mr Minto says he's now finding it difficult coming to terms with what's happened, and he's also cancelled the plan that his nan had in place with Pure Cremation as well.
"At the end of the day, we made an agreement with Pure Cremation and they did not follow through with it," he said.
"My grandad spent his life helping me and helping my family, he was a selfless man who struggled with mobility for the last 10 years.
"All I could do for him was make sure he was cared for after he died, but he ultimately wasn't shown that same respect he'd shown others all his life when the time came."
In the letter Mr Minto received, Pure Cremation said it had taken the loss of the metal knee "very seriously".
The company said: "Regarding the replacement metal knee joint not being returned to you, this was due to human error during the final steps in preparing Terence’s ashes following cremation.
"Unfortunately, the member of the team responsible for this did not complete the request for the metals to be returned.
"As a result of this, the replacement metal knee joint was unfortunately not returned to you and was recycled.
"This is something we take very seriously, and we will be addressing this directly with the member of staff in question.
"In addition to this, we will be reviewing our processes to ensure that they are robust and support the team in ensuring we can mitigate against this happening for other families we look after in the future."
DerbyshireLive approached Pure Cremation directly for comment on the issue, but did not receive a reply before publication.
