Cats can be a nuisance in the garden, but these natural cat deterrents using common kitchen scraps could help keep them away

Cats are free to wander wherever they like, which can prove problematic for those with immaculately kept gardens. From treating flowerbeds as litter trays to excavating plants, felines enjoy exploring, much to gardeners' frustration.

If you're finding them troublesome, it might be worthwhile implementing measures to discourage them. While it's impossible to entirely prevent a cat from accessing your garden, there are several harmless, natural approaches to attempt, according to an online forum.

In the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, an anonymous member sought assistance.

The post read: "I'm at my wits' end. The neighbourhood cats have taken to using my garden as a toilet.

"What can I use to stop this habit, and what can I use after I've removed the mess to stop them coming back? I really hate cleaning up, and I'm doing this at least twice a day."

Fellow group members were experiencing similar issues, with nearly 150 comments on the post, suggesting different food scraps.

Becky Atkinson wrote: "I sprinkle chilli flakes every two weeks. They don't eat it because they hate the smell. It deters them from coming back."

Thomas Harding said: "I use chilli flakes too, they're super cheap and I only use them to deter pests."

Simply distribute some chilli flakes around plant pots or across flower beds to keep unwanted visitors at bay. Ensure you scatter them during dry weather, as they may otherwise be washed away.

A further recommendation involved citrus peel. Michelle Ellen said: "Put orange peel down around your garden. Cats dislike citrus, and it won't hurt them or your garden.

"Simply chuck a lemon or orange peel around once you've eaten the fruit and watch them never come to your garden."

Lisa Monks added: "My mum is a keen gardener and we swear by orange peel. She has it on her lawn, seems to work."

Citrus peel can also prove useful in repelling other unwanted pests, such as mosquitoes, during the warmer summer months.

Ronny Armitage suggested utilising coffee grounds, noting that cats "absolutely hate" their powerful aroma and coarse texture.

These can be scattered along the borders where cats tend to relieve themselves, encouraging them to keep their distance.

Ronny further noted that certain coffee shops will hand out their surplus grounds at no charge for those who don't drink coffee themselves.

Jill Thomas noted: "I've tried many things, and the coffee seems to be the most effective. Great fertiliser for plants too."
