Forza Horizon 6 already looks like the kind of racing game that would feel amazing in VR, but one user has now shown it running with a VR mod and a full motion simulator setup, and it looks wild.

On Reddit, a VR enthusiastic posted a clip that shows Forza Horizon 6 being played in stereo 3D VR while the player sits inside a motion rig that moves with the car. The chair tilts, rotates, recenters, and reacts to acceleration, braking, turns, and loss of grip.

It is worth noting that this is not the older “fake VR” method where the flat image is wrapped around your headset. Instead, the setup shown here uses a real stereo 3D VR mod, although it is still in development and has glitches.

In a normal racing game, you see the car slide or lose traction. But with this setup, the rig physically moves when the rear of the car starts to go, then slowly recenters itself. The user says that in VR, the recentering is not very noticeable once the headset is on.

For proper sim racing, less movement is usually better, but Forza Horizon is more arcade-like than something like Assetto Corsa. The motion can look exaggerated from the outside, but the idea is to trick your body into feeling acceleration and g-forces using telemetry data.

But there are some rough edges. For example, the user pointed out that motion compensation is important. Without it, the headset view can feel like it is being thrown around with the chair. With motion compensation, the camera can be adjusted in software so your in-game position stays more stable while the rig still gives you the physical sensation of movement.

Some users have reported jitter, distortion, eye strain, glitches, and nausea, especially during longer sessions. The creator of the video also says it is not something he would recommend for long play sessions yet.

The mod can interact with game files, and while no bans have been reported so far, there is always some risk when using this kind of tool with an online game. Unfortunately, it's a paid mod, and you can download it here.

Still, the result is hard to ignore. Forza Horizon 6 in VR with a wheel, pedals, and a motion rig looks like the kind of setup most racing fans dream about but almost never get to try.

It is not perfect yet, and it clearly needs tuning, but the fact that it works at all is impressive. If the VR mod keeps improving, Forza Horizon 6 could become one of the most exciting unofficial PC VR racing experiences around.
