Hybrid power, a T-Roc-influenced design, and a possible name change could all be coming to Volkswagen's next-generation Nivus

A new VW Nivus is coming, and it might not answer to the same name when it arrives. Quick primer for anyone unfamiliar. The Nivus is Latin America’s affordable take on the VW Taigo, and though this prototype wears bodywork that looks production-ready, the real story is what’s buried underneath, where the changes live.

The next Nivus should ride on VW’s updated MQB Evo platform, retiring the MQB A0 architecture that carries the current car. The body panels obscure all of it, of course, but the prototype leaves a few tells about what’s changed below the surface.

For example, the existing Taigo bodywork has elements held on with rivets, suggesting that the front-end geometry has been modified and that the vehicle underneath is slightly wider and longer than the outgoing one.

A Sleeker T-Roc?

The existing Nivus was subtly refreshed in late 2024, and given this prototype has the body of the current Taigo, it’s hard to know what the next-generation model will look like. Our spy photographers suggest that the vehicle’s design could take inspiration from the latest VW T-Roc.

If that’s the case, it would mean a radical new design with more modern, intricate lighting, a different grille and air intakes, plus new door skins. It might not end up being the sexiest SUV on the market, but it could be quite head-turning, particularly given that it seems it will retain the same sleek roofline and rear window as the current model.

The interior will also inevitably receive a big update. The current model incorporates the central infotainment display into the center of the dashboard, but in the 2026 T-Roc, as well as most other new VW models, there’s now a free-standing screen perched on the dash.

As the all-new Nivus is still quite some time away from hitting the market, powertrain details remain unconfirmed. However, it’s speculated it could receive the same new mild-hybrid and full-hybrid powertrain as the T-Roc, based on the company’s 1.5-liter TSI Evo2 engine.
