Blue Jays fans aren’t about to abandon their beloved ball club any time soon, but surely their patience must be running out.

The Rogers Centre has become a place to be seen and enjoy what has become a glorified party zone around most of the venue, save for the high-priced seating and its attendant amenities.

But even the deep-pocketed ticket-buyers want some bang for their buck.

At this point in the season, home fans have not witnessed many wins. Following Sunday’s 3-0 loss in the series rubber match to the Chicago White Sox, the Jays dropped their home record to 25-27 and their overall mark to 46-53.

Once again, it was the Jays offence facing most of the attention. When Ernie Clement and Nathan Lukes led off the ninth inning with infield singles, it was just the club’s third and fourth hits of the afternoon.

The situation was ripe for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who stepped in as the potential tying run. Swinging at the first pitch he saw, he made solid contact, slicing a drive to right-centre that wound up being caught for the first out.

The contest ended when Kazuma Okamoto, who went hitless in the series, grounded into a game-ending double play.

The following are three takeaways on a day in which White Sox starter Sean Burke was in complete control.

TREY DAY GOES AWRY

Much like spot starter Spencer Miles encountered in Friday night’s series opener, Trey Yesavage didn’t receive any run support on Sunday.

Yesavage started strong, throwing strikes on 10 of his first 11 pitches and striking out six of the first eight White Sox batters he faced.

But a leadoff walk in the fourth inning — which eventually came around to score on a one-out sacrifice fly — would give the visitors all the runs they would require on this day.

Yesavage gave up two more runs in the sixth, including a solo blast from Colson Montgomery, his 24th homer of the season.

The margin for error with this Blue Jays club is so thin that even an encouraging start for Yesavage is all but forgotten when the offence can’t get anything going.

The young right-hander wound up going six innings, allowing the three runs on five hits and two walks. His nine strikeouts were a definitie sign of optimism.

Consistency remains elusive for Yesavage, whose meteoric rise through the system last season and his post-season success created expectations that were too inflated.

HITLESS AND HAPLESS

Guerrero wasn’t the only hitter to struggle Sunday, but given his status he’ll always be a lightning rod until, and unless, he is able to regain his stroke.

He went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in this one after going 2-for-3 with a walk in Saturday’s 1-0 Jays win.

Okamoto was equally ineffective, while Lukes produced half of the club’s four hits, neither leaving the infield.

The only ball to reach the outfield turf was a two-out single by Daulton Varsho in the seventh.

BOTTOM OF THE BARREL

When a lineup gets completely shut down by an opposing starter, it would be unfair to single out a specific area.

Even when the opening lineup was revealed, the Jays’ bottom of the order spoke to the lack of depth and the need to somehow lengthen the lineup. Unless some internal improvement develops, which seems unlikely given the extended body of work, a trade can’t hurt.

Having Brandon Valenzuela, who has acquitted himself well as a rookie, Andres Gimenez and Jonatan Clase in the bottom of the order doesn’t scream success.

With one last opportunity to make an impact on the game, the switch-hitting Valenzuela led off the eighth inning against lefty Bryan Hudson with a flyout to left. Luis Urias, pinch-hitting for Gimenez, then struck out before Clase, who fanned twice against Burke, grounded out.

The perennially problematic Rays have won five of six games this season against the Jays, but are coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the insanely hot Boston Red Sox … RHP Nick Martinez (8-2, 2.65 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for the AL East leading Rays.
