Josie Carroll has three Queen’s/King’s Plate wins. She will likely be looking for her fourth next month with a very exciting filly.

The hall-of-fame trainer enjoyed what she saw when Luster dominated the $750,000 Woodbine Oaks on Sunday and put herself squarely among the favourites for the Aug. 15 classic.

Ridden by John Velazquez, Luster broke well and was near the front early in the 1 1/8-mile race. Velazquez sent her to the lead ahead of longshot pacesetter Kinzie Girl early around the far turn. The hall-of-fame rider had to do very little after that as Luster willingly opened up from second-place horse Dixie Law and ended up geared down in the final steps to the wire.

The Oaks was just Luster’s fifth start. She won her first two starts and after a third-place finish in the Ruling Angel Stakes in May, Luster solidified her favoritism for the Oaks by winning the Selene Stakes last month.

“Tremendously exciting horse,” Carroll said. “She certainly looks like she will get a route of ground.”

“She’s seems to be moving forward all the time.”

DISTANCE NOT A PROBLEM

Another horse now on the avenue to the Plate is Highwaytothemoon. The three-year-old gelding proved his mettle over a longer distance in winning the $200,000 Plate Trial Stakes.

Ridden by Rafael Hernandez, Highwaytothemoon took a forward position and tracked the lead early in the 1 1/8-mile race. He ran comfortably to the turn where he found top stride. In the stretch, he split pacesetter Casson and longshot Imyourmedicineman and drew off to a one-length win.

“He showed he a lot of heart,” Hernandez said. “I wanted to make sure he was involved in the race and not do too much early.”

“When I asked him to go, he was ready.”

This was the first time Highwaytothemoon ran around two turns. His first six races were one-turn sprints including his last, a win in the seven-furlong Queenston Stakes. The ability to run a distance was even a surprise to trainer Dale Desruisseaux.

“He’s done everything we’ve asked him,” he said “He went from an five-eighths maiden race to a mile and an eighth.”

In the $200,000 Nassau Stakes, Vina Arana scored a dominant four-length win. Ridden by Adam Beschizza, Vina Arana raced at the back of the seven-horse field early in the one-mile turf race, exploded by her competitors around the turn and ran much the best in the stretch.

An five-year-old Irish-bred trained in Kentucky by Jack Sisterson, Vina Arana now has three wins in 12 career starts.

And in the $200,000 Connaught Cup, six-year-old gelding G T Five Hundred scored an upset win at odds of 31-1. Ridden by Jose Campos, G T Five Hundred stayed close to the pace for most of the one-mile race. In the stretch, he gave Piper’s Factor a small nudge to get off the rail and run down pacesetter Maycocks Bay. At the end, he held off a closing Irish Aces to win by a neck. Desruisseaux also trains this runner who now has 11 wins in 44 starts.
