A portion of the trail around Haig Mill Lake Park is closing on Tuesday for more paving work. The third phase of the project to create a paved pathway around the lake will be carried out in the southwest area of the lake. Public Works Department officials expect that section of the trail to be closed for approximately two months. 

Work to create a paved trail around the lake began last December. Once completed, the paved trail sections will be ten feet wide and perfect for road bicycling enthusiasts and also walkers and joggers. Portions of the existing nature trail will also be left in their natural state. Because of the two dams that create the park's water reservoir, it will not be possible to create a fully paved loop around the lake. Instead, there are plans to replace the gravel surface on the dams with a more compacted aggregate stone surface that will be more friendly to bicycles or wheelchairs. A portion of the southwest corner of the existing nature trail will also not be paved due to the steep hills and sharp turns. In that section, the nature trail will be preserved and the paved path will take users onto the park's entry road which they can follow into the parking lot where they can rejoin the trail. The first phase of the project in the northwest section of the trail was completed in April. The second phase of the project on the east side of the lake was finished last month. 

The areas of the trail which are not under construction will remain open to the public. Signage will be posted to mark the construction zone and officials urge visitors to stay out of the construction area.
