Compact discs are making an unexpected comeback, with Gen Z fueling a surge in sales despite many younger buyers not owning a CD player. New industry data shows that CDs are now growing faster than vinyl, highlighting a broader revival of physical music formats.

The figures come from Luminate’s 2026 Midyear Report, which found that CD sales climbed 16 percent during the first half of 2026, reaching 16.3 million units. By comparison, vinyl sales increased just 2.4 percent over the same period. While K-Pop has played a major role in the trend, CD sales still rose 6.7 percent year over year even after excluding the genre from the data.

One of the biggest contributors was BTS, whose 10th studio album ARIRANG became one of the year’s top-selling CDs. Other K-Pop groups, including ENHYPEN and ATEEZ, also boosted sales through deluxe packaging, collectible photo cards, and retailer-exclusive editions that appeal to dedicated fans.

The resurgence extends beyond CDs. Combined sales of vinyl records, CDs, and cassette tapes reached 38.2 million units in the United States during the first half of 2026, representing a 7.8 percent increase from the previous year. The figures suggest that physical media continues to attract consumers despite the dominance of music streaming services.

Changing listening habits among younger audiences are also driving the trend. Luminate found that 60 percent of Gen Z listeners now say they most frequently listen to music from the 1990s or earlier, a dramatic increase from just 18 percent in 2021. The growing interest in older music has coincided with renewed enthusiasm for vintage media formats.

Retail patterns are evolving as well. Independent record stores remain the largest sellers of physical albums, but major retailers such as Target and Walmart have significantly expanded their share of the market. Together, the two chains accounted for roughly 30 percent of physical music sales during the first half of the year.

Despite the revival, many Gen Z consumers are purchasing CDs primarily as collectibles rather than for everyday listening. With fewer computers, cars, and home audio systems including disc drives, many fans own albums they cannot easily play, turning CDs into display pieces and memorabilia rather than traditional music players.
