Current Vice Chair Sophia Berestecky will be the new chair of the Hamilton County High School Democrats for the 2026-2027 school year.

She was unanimously elected by local high school Democrats "due to her tireless dedication to furthering the voice of Hamilton County’s youth in our local politics and her distinguished record as vice chair.

"Sophia has served Hamilton County with honor and dedication, becoming a leading voice in the calls to protect public education and end school vouchers, protect immigrants across Tennessee, and most notably for the restoration of Centerstone Mental Health Services in Hamilton County Schools. 

"As chair, Sophia will further assume the role of Hamilton County Democratic Party Executive Committee representative for the High School Democrats, becoming the youngest-ever executive committeeperson for the HCDP."

Speaking to members following her election, she said, “As chairwoman, I hope to grow a membership base that is equipped to organize for change both within the Democratic Party and without it.

I want to facilitate experiences for students to be civically engaging. I will continue to lead as someone who listens, prepares, and works for change across Hamilton County and Tennessee.”  Outgoing Chair Reed Hampton said, “I am looking forward to watching what Sophia brings to the HCHSD. She has been a tremendous partner as vice chair, and I could not be more excited for the future of high school-aged Democrats under her leadership. She has an incredible record fighting for every person across Hamilton County and for stepping up to fight for public education.”
