A Call For Stronger Action Against Drug Dealers - And Response

As the parent of someone who is now seven months clean and sober, I refuse to stay silent.

I've watched addiction nearly destroy my family. Recovery has shown me just how precious life is -and just how much is at stake when drugs continue to flood our communities.

Many people in our area have long expressed concerns about drug activity (especially fentanyl) and prostitution around certain motel corridors, including areas near Interstate 75 and Ringgold Road, as well as Lee Highway and Bonny Oaks. Yet to many of us, it feels like the same problems continue year after year while families are left to pick up the pieces.

Law enforcement has a difficult and dangerous job, and I respect those who put on the badge every day. But respect also means expecting results. Families deserve to see sustained, visible action against those who profit from addiction instead of watching these problems persist.

Every drug dealer allowed to keep operating is another opportunity for someone's son, daughter, mother or father to relapse - or to never make it home at all. My child has fought to get seven months clean and sober. Not every family gets that miracle.

This is a call for accountability, stronger enforcement against those trafficking drugs and a commitment to making our communities safer. Addiction is destroying families. We cannot accept the status quo and pretend it's enough.

Our loved ones are worth fighting for.

Opioid dealers are the most violent criminals in Hamilton County. The District Attorney’s Office began prioritizing these offenders almost four years ago by dedicating a full time prosecutor to ensuring drug dealers receive the harshest punishments the law allows.

Our efforts, along with local law enforcement and significant commitments from county government to affect addiction, have led to a significant decrease in fatal overdoses over the last four years.

There is always room for improvement and we will continue to grow our efforts, please understand that this is and will continue to be a priority in criminal justice.

We cannot prosecute ourselves out of addiction. Addicts need support and services. But dealers deserve prison.

Your voice is heard and your concerns are valid.
