An investigation is underway after the skeletal remains of three people were found inside of a home in Burlington over the weekend, according to state police.
Troopers responded to a home on Stanwich Lane on Sunday around 4:45 p.m. for a report of human remains inside.
According to state police, the new homebuyer, who purchased the home “as is” at a foreclosure auction, found the skeletal remains of three people at the home.
The medical examiner has not yet determined a cause or manner of death, officials said Wednesday. Investigators have not released the identities of the three people.
State police said there appears to be no criminal aspect at this time and there is no indication of anything suspicious.
“This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public at this time,” police said.
Burlington property records show a couple purchased the home in 2019.
In August 2025, the foreclosure process started. Last Wednesday, a public auction was held to sell the house in “as-is condition.”
NBC Connecticut spoke with Chris Thogmartin, the independent third-party attorney appointed by the court to manage the sale, about why bidders might not always see the inside of the property in auctions.
“I always send out a letter, like the week before the auction saying, listen, you know, there’s a foreclosure auction scheduled. It would be helpful for the bidders to have interior access. You’re not required to provide this, but I think it might be in your best interest,” Thogmartin said. “We never got a response to that, which is not unusual.”
He also said a “keep out” sign appeared on the property during the foreclosure process, despite the house looking unkept and not lived in.
“I don’t think anyone have been inside, but who knows? I mean, it puzzles me as to who would put that sign up. I suppose it could have been the owner,” he added.
According to court documents, the owners didn’t show up for the hearings.
“I don’t believe there was an appearance filed, and there was certainly no response to the letters I sent,” Thogmartin said.
NBC Connecticut is working to get in contact with the initial homeowners as well.
