Arsenal have been left without a choice as Mikel Arteta's transfer frustrations clear

Arsenal are searching for players who can strengthen their title-winning team but have so far encountered frustration in a challenging and inflated transfer market

With over a month to go in the summer transfer window, the number of seismic deals that have already occurred would indicate that Premier League clubs are well on track to eclipse last year's record spend of £3billion.
While the majority of said deals have involved the league's elite, Arsenal have so far only added Christos Tzolis for £34million from Club Brugge with Illan Meslier, the former Leeds goalkeeper, also joining on a free transfer.
Strengthening a title-winning side is no mean feat and Arsenal have tried to be active. But the problem the Gunners have found is that they are trying to act rationally in a market which is now completely bereft of sanity.
Transfer fees have soared in recent years and are now well into obscene territory. And if the majority are moving with the tide rather than pushing against it, then that leaves others in a difficult spot.
It has been well documented that Morgan Rogers was Arsenal's first choice target in their search for a new left attacker. They were widely regarded as the red-hot favourites to land him, but a gulf in valuations of the player between the champions and Aston Villa allowed Chelsea to swoop in. They were willing to make Rogers the most expensive British footballer of all time with a £117m package. Arsenal, though prepared to pay a premium on top of the £80m figure they valued Rogers at, were not.
There are similarities in their pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes: the Brazilian is an established quality operator at Premier League level and Newcastle have little to no appetite when it comes to a transfer. It's hard to see the situation unravelling to the extent that saw Alexander Isak complete his protracted move to Liverpool last year. An offer of £70m has been mooted for a player who, although top-class, turns 29 later this year. It's expected Newcastle will reject that out of hand — do Arsenal go much higher, if at all?
And therein lies the catch: although they may not want to, it could prove to be that they are left with little choice but to exceed their valuations for their top transfer targets if they are to attain the calibre of player they require to progress again after their title win.
The blockbuster transfer fees it has taken to acquire Rogers and Elliot Anderson (£116m) have already become benchmarks rather than a breaking point.
If Arsenal are looking to level up then it's hard to see how they land a ceiling-raiser for the left wing berth without breaking the £100m barrier. Indeed, two other players they have been credited with an interest in, Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande, are unlikely to move for less than a figure in that ballpark. Another mooted target, Julian Alvarez, would command an even greater fee in order for Atletico Madrid to consider selling.
The ripple effects of other deals have already been felt domestically in the market, too.
Mateus Fernandes was pursued aggressively by Manchester United, but they were not willing to match the astronomic £85m package that Tottenham put down to sign him. It will not be lost on Arsenal or their supporters that their arch-rivals have not shied away from the vastly inflated fees now dominating the market, with Spurs also shelling out a mammoth £100m package to acquire Sandro Tonali. Both players were on Arsenal's radar earlier in the summer and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that other targets currently valued at more feasible figures suddenly skyrocket out of reach due to other deals.
Arsenal ended an arduous 22-year title drought with their Premier League triumph last season. The hope is that such a wait does not occur again. But competition for their domestic crown will be fierce; Manchester City will come again, albeit without Pep Guardiola. Liverpool have a new manager and will expect to challenge for the title again. Chelsea, fresh off hijacking Arsenal's deal for Rogers, feel like they could also be back with Xabi Alonso at the helm.
Abstaining from paying the sort of monstrous transfer fees it seemingly now takes to acquire elite players could prove catastrophic if they harbour genuine ambitions of replicating the success of last season. Arteta has already made it crystal clear where he stands on that front.
“We want to reach another level,” he said in the aftermath of Arsenal's Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. “It is going to demand us to be very, very ambitious, very fast and very smart.”
All of the teams listed above who will harbour title aspirations have broken the £100m barrier more than once since City made Jack Grealish the Premier League's first £100m player. Arsenal solitary foray into the nine-figure realm came back in 2023 to make Declan Rice their club-record signing.
With the current direction of the transfer market, Arsenal may have no choice but to do so again if they are to sign the players capable of matching Arteta's ambitions. Because transfer fees only seem to be going one way.
