Middlesbrough starlet Harley Hunt has suffered a cruel injury blow ahead of the start of the new season.
Posting on his Instagram, the defender confirmed that he has had to undergo surgery, describing himself as ‘gutted’. It’s understood he’s suffered a hamstring injury and faces three to four months on the sidelines.
It comes just months after the 18-year-old returned from a year-long absence. He made his long-awaited return to action in March, and even made the bench for the first leg of Boro's play-off semi-final.
But posting about his surgery on social media, the promising young defender said: “Words can’t describe how gutted I am to have started the season like this so I won’t say much.
“But with a successful surgery complete, I will be back much stronger ready to go again. Big thanks to everyone that’s helped in this past week.”
The defender is highly rated at Boro and was part of the first-team squad that travelled to Portugal for a training camp earlier this month.

He joined Boro from Swindon Town in the summer of 2024. Aged 16 at the time, he’d already featured in first-team games and was quickly drafted into Michael Carrick’s first-team squad after impressing the then-boss and his assistant Jonathan Woodgate.
He made his Boro debut in the Carabao Cup defeat against Stoke City shortly after arriving at the club and was a regular in first-team squads before suffering his initial injury in January 2025. With a few setbacks along the way, it would be 14 months before he finally returned to action for Boro’s second string.
This new injury explains the centre-back’s absence from Boro’s friendly draw with Celtic at the weekend. With a number of absentees due to illness in the squad, it was assumed Hunt was also impacted because he almost certainly would have been involved otherwise.
Instead, Hunt’s absence was due to the hamstring injury he’s suffered, and he now faces more months on the sidelines.

There is better news on the injury front for Boro. In clips from training posted on social media by Boro on Tuesday, the senior players who missed out through illness at the weekend, including Aidan Morris, were all back in training.
So too were both Alfie Jones and Kyle Joseph. Both are recovering from injuries and Kim Hellberg had estimated they would face another 10 to 14 days out before returning to training. Instead, the pair were both involved in Tuesday’s session at Rockliffe with their team-mates.
Meanwhile, tickets are also now available for Boro’s annual open training session at the Riverside. It will take place on Monday, August 3, starting at approximately 2.30pm. Tickets are free and can be ordered on the club’s ticketing website: tickets.mfc.co.uk.
