Efforts to remove a pollution discovered on Thursday in the River Fekete-Körös are set to begin on Friday afternoon, according to a statement issued by the Körös Regional Water Directorate (Kövizig) to the Hungarian news agency MTI. Preliminary results from official water samples are also expected to arrive later on Friday.

Preparations for on-site intervention are already under way, the authority said. Necessary fieldwork is being carried out to clear accumulated debris, ensuring that heavy machinery and transport vehicles can safely access the affected area.

The substantial mass of debris — believed, according to press reports, to be cattle manure — is currently stable. A submerged barrier installed to prevent its spread continues to contain the pollution, the Hungarian news agency wrote.

Water abstraction points within the Békés weir system remain temporarily closed, the statement added. Two designated bathing areas on the Körös rivers, at Szanazug and Városerdő, have been shut. Further measures will depend on laboratory analysis of water samples taken at multiple locations.

Water quality damage control operations continue under a third-degree alert level, the authority confirmed.

Later, the authorities said they had removed the pollution from the affected stretch of the river.
