Romería (Carla Simón, 2025).With her new film Romería (2025), Catalan director Carla Simón concludes an intimate cycle of films drawing from the well of her rich and bittersweet family history. Her feature debut, Summer 1993 (2017), was garlanded with three Goyas, Spain’s most prestigious film award, while Alcarràs (2022) won the Golden Bear at Berlinale.On the occasion of Romería’s world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Notebook invited Simón to answer a round of quickfire questions related to her filmmaking practice and beyond. The interview was originally published in the Notebook Special, a limited edition print-publication distributed at Cannes in 2025.What was the last thing you said out loud?“I need to sleep.”If you had to encapsulate your new film in one image, how would you describe that image?A wild wind blows the hair of a young couple as they share a cigarette and eat clams on an empty beach.What is a piece of advice that you often return to?Look at what’s happening in front of the camera, because it might be more interesting than what you wrote in the script.What is a question that you ask yourself when looking at a draft of your work?Is this something I really want to film? Is this an image or a sound that I really want to have in the film?What is a song that gets stuck in your head?“The Flight of the Swans” by Tchaikovsky. It’s my son’s new favorite song.What is the last great movie you watched, and where did you watch it?I saw Grand Tour [2024] by Miguel Gomes in the cinema.Where do you prefer to sit in a movie theater?Right in the center.What is a line from a film that stays with you?“‘Do you own a videocamera?’ ‘No, I like to remember things my own way.’” From Lost Highway [1997] by David Lynch.What’s a subject you’d like to make a movie about?Flamenco music.How do you relax after work?By reading children’s books to my son.What is your favorite thing about making movies?I get to play God, creating a whole world of new relationships between fictional characters. We practice this in our long rehearsal period, when I’m alone with the actors, improvising moments that could have happened before the story that we go on to tell in the film.What characteristics do you look for in a collaborator?The people I work with are very rigorous. They always think we can get it better. Being self-critical makes us question ourselves, share our doubts, and make sure we have a dialogue about all the decisions we take.What does your family make of your movies?They help me make them. My sister plays in them, and my brother makes the music. Both my parents and my partner read the script and watch the cuts.Who are the first people you discuss an idea with?My partner and my producer.Where, outside of movies, do you look for inspiration?Listening to my family’s stories, recalling memories, or just watching people. I like watching people.What is the last good book you read?Family in Brussels by Chantal Akerman.Who is your favorite filmmaker and why?That’s a very difficult question to answer. I can watch Víctor Erice’s films over and over again.Who are your dream dinner party guests, living and/or dead?Frank Zappa, Lucrecia Martel, Luis Buñuel, Natalia Ginzburg, Keith Haring, and Cristina García Rodero. An interesting conversation would emerge between them.How and where do you collect and develop the ideas for your work?I very often record conversations without anyone noticing.What is the last dream you remember having?I dream every night. Last night I was climbing a very high and difficult mountain with my whole family: my partner, my son, my parents, and my siblings. They were all tired, so I cheered them up. At one point, my son was about to fall, so I decided we had to stop even though we hadn’t reached the top.
