Residents on a single block in San Diego’s Kensington neighborhood say a string of home and vehicle break-ins has left elderly neighbors frightened and demanding more police protection.
The latest burglary happened overnight, when an 84-year-old woman who asked to be identified only as Josie slept through a break-in at her home. She said burglars ransacked the house, stealing cash, jewelry, her checkbook and her car.
Photos taken inside the home show dresser drawers emptied and belongings scattered throughout the house.
“I can’t get to one of the bathrooms because of the debris is so deep,” Josie said.
Another victim, Dennis Lauck, said thieves broke into his car last Sunday and stole his search-and-rescue equipment bag and a defibrillator. Lauck volunteers with a search-and-rescue team.
“Now it seems like am I going to have my home entered tomorrow night,” Lauck said.
“I was shocked that anybody would ever … I’d think I could leave it on the hood of my car and who would want to take that?” he said.
A third victim, who did not want to appear on camera, told NBC San Diego her mother’s home on the same block has been burglarized seven or eight times since March. She said thieves once parked a U-Haul outside the home to load stolen property. Police said that burglary happened months earlier and is not believed to be connected to the current investigations.
“If I were to rank people in the world, I think that would be the lowest form,” she said.
Neighbors said Ring camera footage has captured suspicious vehicles driving through the area at night with dimmed headlights. They also shared video they found unusual that appears to show one of the suspected burglars fleeing while wearing what appeared to be a petticoat-style mini skirt. By neighbors’ accounts, the group includes two men and one woman.
San Diego Police’s Mid-City Division is investigating the string of burglaries.
In an email responding to NBC San Diego’s questions, police said, “There are two burglaries in the immediate area that may be related. We have not identified additional related cases, and the U-Haul burglary occurred months earlier and is not believed to be connected to these investigations.”
Police said Mid-City’s Crime Suppression Team has conducted proactive enforcement and directed patrols throughout the affected neighborhood. Investigators have also canvassed the area for security video.
Josie said the crimes have left her fearful.
“That’s kind of the scariest part,” she said. “If I were attacked today I don’t think I could do anything about it.”
Residents said they want increased police patrols during the day and at night, informational flyers to warn neighbors, and an emergency community meeting to provide updates on the investigations.
“I’m scared and I am very annoyed because I am almost 85 and I just want some serenity in my life,” she said.
