Cinnamon Trust looking for Newcastle volunteers to help provide dog walking support to local elderly owners

The national charity, Cinnamon Trust is looking for local volunteers in Newcastle and across the North East to add to their services that offer vital pet care such as dog walking to pets of those in the community who are over 65 or terminally ill and are unable to do this currently. The charity’s main goal is to keep owners and pets together for as long as possible with the help of a national network of volunteers who offer free assistance when day to day care poses a problem.

As any pet owner knows, the love and companionship that comes from a pet is a bond unlike any other and for those who are no longer able to carry out certain day to day tasks like dog walking can face a heart-breaking decision such as rehoming. The Cinnamon Trust aims to alleviate that worry through work with volunteers who are able to carry out these tasks.

The Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis and named after her cherished Corgi, Cinnamon, who passed away at 17 years old around the time of the formation of the charity. Mrs Jarvis was inspired to create the charity, not just because of the loss of her own beloved pet, but from witnessing the heartache that elderly and terminally ill owners went through when forced to part with their beloved companions.

The trust looks after a range of animals including dogs, cats, small animals, birds and even goats. Volunteers work in teams to take in turns to visit pet owners and develop a relationship between pet, owner and volunteer, who are able to help owners in a way that is most appropriate for them.

It is a win -win situation for both owners and volunteers and offers the opportunity for long lasting social connections not just between animals and volunteers but between owners and volunteers as well.

For owners like Angela, contacting Cinnamon Trust was one of the best moves she ever made, as she said: “They introduced me to several volunteer dog walkers in the area. That was some five years ago and two of them are still walking him. Alfie welcomes them with open paws as he knows he will have a fun long walk. We are lucky to have both the countryside and beach close by, both of which he loves.”

Volunteers feel the benefits of being able to help like Jayne who is a dog walking volunteer for owner Mary. She said: “The Cinnamon Trust make it possible for pets like Lovely to stay safe, loved and cared for when their owner faces challenges - illness, hospital stays or other circumstances that mean they need temporary help.

Volunteers like us step in to offer a home, walks or companionship, making sure the pet remains happy until they can be reunited with their owner or forever home. We thought we were signing up to help someone in need. What we didn’t expect was how much Lovely would give back to us.”

Chrissy, another dog walking volunteer, said: “Being Teddy’s dog walker has enriched my life more than I ever expected. I work remotely in a quiet, rural location, and heading out with Teddy, no matter the weather, gets me away from the computer and into the worlds of humans and canines.

"Our walks give me structure, purpose and a reason to lace up my trainers each day. I’ve made friends I never would have met otherwise, simply by stopping to talk to neighbours or other dog walkers. Over time, even my partner has joined us on our walks and now Teddy feels like a cherished part of our little family too.” Lucy, another volunteer, has made friends with Buddy’s owner Sheila.

She said: “Our walks with Buddy means a lot to us. It allows me, my mum and sister to spend quality time together and has given us a great friend in Sheila. I always look forward to walking Buddy, even on the days where rain pours or strong winds blow. Volunteering with The Cinnamon Trust has done so much more than just help Buddy and Sheila together at home, it’s provided us with a sense of connection, community and many many smiles.”

The trust is currently looking for locals in Newcastle to help with dog walking. For those interested they can apply through The Trust’s website.
