Infinity Ward has dropped a brief teaser of Modern Warfare 4's Kill Block. This is a new type of multiplayer experience for Call of Duty, an ever-changing arena that's assembled from hundreds of different map variations. Think of it like a procedurally generated small map.

Though it might seem a little unusual to highlight a side mode the first time multiplayer gameplay is being shown - rather than offer a look at traditional modes, such as Team Deathmatch or Kill Confirmed - Kill Block is the experience that will be available for some this weekend. Sadly that only includes the people attending Fanatics Fest NYC. The event takes place 16th-19th July at New York City's Javits Center, and it's there that attendees will be able to play MW4 multiplayer for the first time.

There is no alpha or any other public limited-time test to accompany this event, strangely, meaning only those on the ground at Fanatics Fest NYC will be able to play. Perhaps the most bizarre omission in this arrangement is the lack of a central livestream the rest of us can watch to follow the action. Activision has not confirmed a Call of Duty: Next showcase event for this year, so the next time we get a look at multiplayer will likely be during the beta later this summer, unless the developer decides to share more footage in the interim.

As for Kill Block itself, the adaptive mode's maps will support 3v3 Gunfight, and the new 10v10 Gunfight at launch. More traditional multiplayer modes will arrive post-launch.

Each Kill Block map is made up of three sections either inspired by classic Modern Warfare maps or entirely new designs. The layouts reconfigure between matches, pulling from what Infinity Ward calls "Slabs", which are essentially sections that form the outer and central areas of a map. The developer said you can expect over 500 configurations at launch.

Because of its Gunfight nature, all players will spawn with the same loadout, pulled from a randomised set of weapons, Lethals and Tacticals. Custom loadouts will likely become an option, however, once non-Gunfight modes become available to play on Kill Block.
