These aren’t the days for heady research or strenuous introspection. As mid-July rolls around, the summer wine vibes continue in full swing. Ideally that means serving bottles with more carefree and leisurely excursions and experiences. But that doesn’t have to equate to thoughtless summer pairings. Here are three examples of prime wines ready for peak summer sipping.

Cono Sur 2024 Bicicleta Sauvignon Blanc, Chile ($11.99 on sale until July 25 for 1L, #33285

If we’re being honest, Sauvignon Blanc tends not to be the most complicated of white wines. Particularly when it’s made in the popular extroverted, outsized aromatic and zippy style. But these same characteristics sure make for a great summer sipper, there’s just no need to spend big bucks for fulsome wine enjoyment. What this easygoing Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc lacks in nuance, it makes up for in volume (especially enticing at this sale price). Aromas of citrus and herbaceous hints lead into a fresh, basic stance before a crisp finish. Pair with canapés or toss in some fruit and Fanta for an impromptu white wine sangria.

Bottom line: C+. Backyard ready.

Marius Peyol 2025 Rosé, France ($18.99, #325855)

Fresh sockeye is now landing in fish shops and grocery stores — or, even better, on recreational fishers’ hooks — a sure sign of summer. Salmon is a sturdy fish that can be served with all types of wine, from whites to (higher acidity) reds. But let’s not forget pink wines. The other day this cheery, fruity rosé paired remarkably well with a quick-grilled filet. Pouring a light pink, it wafts berry, citrus, and floral aromas with a lively and smooth mid-palate before a balanced, fresh finish. It also helps that cracking open this Coteaux d’Aix en Provence bottle helps the mind transport to breezy, laid-back Mediterranean shores.

Bottom line: B+. Crowd-pleasing, poolside perfect rosé.

La Linda 2024 Old Vines Malbec, Argentina ($24.99, #598896)

As alluded above, the grill has been in heavy rotation. And while whites, rosés, and lighter reds are currently more prevalent in the glass, there are times when a gutsy red remains the right call. The obvious occasion would be when a grill and a chargrilled steak are on the menu. However, don’t overlook roast chicken. This redolent red really shines alongside the BBQ rotisserie attachment. It’s lush, ripe dark fruit nicely parries the lingering smoke and fattiness imparted by slowly crisping chicken skin, and a focus on plushness and lingering spice — and away from bitter tannins and heavy oak — makes this pairing work surprisingly well.

Bottom line: B+. Summer BBQ red.
