I could've done with a lesson in how to style a pencil skirt when I arrived for my first post-university job interview at a stuffy consultancy firm dressed in a grey marl midi and tights with a ladder in them. Luckily, dear reader, I didn't land that job. I'm also pleased to report the once-corporate pencil skirt silhouette has officially clocked off from its nine-to-five.

There’s a reason pencil skirts have long been synonymous with workwear: they’re the perfect foundation for a fail-safe rotation of smart looks. Straight, structured and traditionally cut close to the body, the modern pencil skirt is generally traced back to Christian Dior’s H-line collection of 1954. Conceived as a narrower counterpoint to the designer’s famously full ‘New Look’ skirts, it created a long, streamlined silhouette that resembled - you guessed it - a pencil.

More than 70 years later, designers are sharpening it once again. Pencil skirts led the charge across the autumn/winter 2025 runways, appearing at Gucci in Milan and Miu Miu in Paris. Rather than simply reviving boardroom dressing, both houses made the shape feel considerably less corporate: Gucci styled slit versions with sheer lingerie and sumptuous outerwear, while Miu Miu leaned into deliberately feminine layers, colourful tights and plenty of personality.

The good news is that today’s pencil skirt no longer requires a matching blazer, court shoes or an Outlook calendar packed with meetings. Because the silhouette fits closely through the leg, I personally prefer mine with a kitten heel or pointed toe, which helps to visually lengthen the line.

The gorpcore girls and athleisure crowd would almost certainly disagree, however, and make a convincing case for wearing one with Salomon trainers, sporty layers and an enormous nylon jacket. Consider the pencil skirt’s new job description pleasingly flexible.

A leather pencil skirt can veer a little CEO if you’re not careful, which is where a pair of western boots comes in. The boots take the polish down a notch and make the whole thing feel better suited to Saturday lunch than a boardroom. Add a simple T-shirt, slouchy knit or a cropped denim waistcoat, and keep the rest of the outfit unfussy. Extra points for a skirt with a front split, mainly because those western boots are made for walkin'.

For days when you want to dress like an eccentric aunt with an excellent jewellery collection, pair a pencil skirt with a romantic granny blouse and loafers. Look for lace trims, pussy bows, puffed sleeves or oversized collars, then keep the skirt clean and simple underneath. This is a particularly good office formula, although it also works for gallery trips, long lunches and pretending you have somewhere terribly important to be afterwards.

The easiest way to wear a pencil skirt without thinking too hard is to choose the matching top. A co-ord removes most of the morning decision-making, leaving you free to concentrate on the fun bits: sculptural earrings, a bright bag, oversized sunglasses or an excellent shoe. I’d wear this for dinner, drinks or any event where the dress code is vague but you would still quite like to look as though you understood it.

A suede pencil skirt has a distinctly autumnal mood, but pairing it with a simple tank top stops things becoming too heritage-country-house. Choose a fitted ribbed vest or a clean scoop-neck style, then add sandals in warmer weather or boots once the temperature drops. It’s an easy option for weekend errands that accidentally turn into lunch, particularly with a roomy tote and a cardigan thrown over your shoulders.

A black pencil skirt and leather jacket is the outfit equivalent of adding eyeliner to something sensible. Keep the skirt streamlined, then choose a biker, bomber or oversized leather jacket depending on how much attitude you’re willing to bring to dinner. Underneath, a white T-shirt, fitted knit or silky camisole will do the job. Finish with boots or heels for evening, or trainers for a day spent running around town.

Animal print rarely needs much encouragement, so let the skirt take centre stage and add a plain knit on top. A soft crew neck, neat cardigan or slightly oversized jumper works well, particularly in black, cream, chocolate brown or red. This is ideal for colder office days when trousers feel uninspiring, but it also translates nicely to the weekend with trainers and a crossbody bag. Leopard, naturally, counts as a neutral.

A knee-length pencil skirt and mule kitten heels is a very good answer to the increasingly common problem of needing to look dressed up without wanting to wear a proper high heel. The open back keeps the shoe light, while the pointed toe helps extend the line of the leg. Add a fitted cardigan or sleeveless top for dinner, date night or wedding-adjacent drinks where nobody has specified the dress code properly.
