While classic French tips usually stay firmly in the pink and white colour realm – with cloudy French nails being as experimental as it gets – there are a few different ways in which you can interpret coloured French tips.

For those who just want to dip their toe into the nail trend, stick with the nude base and add a pop of colour at the tip. “It’s a lovely way to introduce a bit of colour without stepping too far outside your comfort zone,” says Susan. “A really fine French line in a soft pastel or even a classic red can look incredibly chic while still feeling understated – you don’t have to go straight for bright rainbow tips.” She suggests red or pastel shades as a way of easing into the trend, or baby blue, butter yellow or coral as great choices too.

If you’re looking to be on-trend with your colourful French tips, there are lots of great nail colours this season that look stunning – whether you’re opting for a micro French or a deep, chunky 90s look.

“This summer has definitely been all about butter yellow, tomato red, pistachio green and bright blues,” says Susan. “They’re fresh, uplifting colours that instantly make your nails feel more seasonal.”

As we move into autumn, keep an eye out on richer tones like chocolate brown, plum, olive green and burgundy. “They’re a great way to keep your manicure feeling current without having to completely change your style.” she adds.

If you’ve got a DIY mentality when it comes to your manicure, coloured French tips are a nail trend that is totally achievable at home. While it may seem daunting, Susan’s advice is not to overcomplicate it – especially if you’re a beginner. “Start with a sheer nude or pink base and use French tip guides if you’re worried about getting a clean line,” she says. “If you’re painting freehand, a thin nail art brush makes a huge difference. Let each layer dry properly before adding the next one, then finish with a glossy top coat to help everything last. Taking your time is honestly the secret to getting that salon-quality finish.”
