The State Highways Department is planning to start the construction of a flyover at Singanallur in a month. Officials of the Department said a four-lane flyover will be constructed for 2.4 km across the Singanallur junction on Trichy Road in the city.

“We have finalised the contractor and the work agreement will be signed soon,” one of the officials said.

The project involves acquisition of 1,500 sq. m. of land in bits to have wider service roads for the ramps. The main carriageway will be four lane and the service roads will be two-lane on either side.

To be taken up at a total cost of ₹170 crore, the project will be completed in two years of the commencement of the work.

Since land will be acquired only for wider area near the ramps, the main carriageway works will start at the earliest, the sources said.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the works should start only after completing land acquisition. “It is a highly congested road and the officials assured at a recent meeting of the MP, MLAs, and the District Collector that the works should start only after completing the land acquisition. Though the land acquisition process is said to have begun, the project is pending for almost six years now. Hence, it can be implemented after acquiring the land.

The NH wing started the Saibaba Colony flyover without completing land acquisition and the road users suffered a lot. The convenience of the public should be taken into consideration.

If the interests of the public are not taken into consideration, we will condemn it and file a complaint with the authorities concerned,” he added.
