District Collector K. Elambahavath on Friday (July 24) said that dyeing units will not be established at the Integrated Textile Park.

The State government had identified 119 acres of land at Jahir Ammapalayam to establish an integrated textile park at a cost of ₹880 crore. As part of the project, dyeing units were to be operated under the name of Salem Yarn Colouring Park (SYCP) in the same place with a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP).

But alleging that this colouring park would affect the groundwater and farming in about 40 villages in and around the park, farmers and villagers had staged many protests over the past one year. Following the protests, the textile park works were halted.

Meanwhile, speaking at the farmers grievances redress day at Salem Collectorate on Friday, the Collector said that as per the government order (G.O.) dated July 22, the SYCP, situated on the 110.53 acre, has been altered into Salem Integrated Textile Park Private Limited.

The land has been allocated for the establishment of an integrated textile park on a 99-year lease. This change has been made in response to the demand of the public and farmers. In line with the demands of the public and farmers, dyeing units will not be set up in the Integrated Textile Park. The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order stating that all industrial lands in the park will be reserved only for textile-related industries, the Collector added.

Stating that as per the G.O., the SIPCOT should identify alternative suitable locations for setting up zero liquid discharge dyeing units, the Collector added. Farmers who participated in the meeting welcomed the announcement.
