OpenAI is launching Health in ChatGPT for US users, enabling connections to Apple Health and supported medical records so ChatGPT can reference health information during conversations.
According to OpenAI, connected medical records, Apple Health data, and related conversations are not used for model training or advertising.
The feature is now available to logged-in US users aged 18 and older on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, accessible from the ChatGPT sidebar.
Health is not currently available in Codex. Users may still ask health questions without connecting any data.
What Health in ChatGPT Does And Models Behind Health ConversationsWith user permission, ChatGPT can access connected information such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep, and activity. It can compare new results with prior tests, summarize changes since the last appointment, or relate sleep, activity, and workouts to a routine. OpenAI states this feature aims to reduce repetitive data entry and support, not replace, care from medical professionals.
OpenAI reports that over 300 million people use ChatGPT for health-related questions each week, often with relevant information spread across patient portals, records, apps, and wearables.
Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced a dedicated health experience to a limited group of users, requiring a separate space in ChatGPT.
OpenAI notes that over 70% of health-related conversations occurred outside this space, prompting the ability to reference health information across all conversations.
The Health section in the sidebar remains the place to connect and manage information, view trends, browse synced records, and revisit past health conversations.
OpenAI states that GPT-5.5 Instant, available on the Free plan, is better at recognizing when urgent care may be needed, requesting relevant context, explaining uncertainty, and simplifying complex information.
GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid users, is described as OpenAI’s most advanced health model, with improved performance on tasks requiring complex reasoning.
OpenAI collaborates with hundreds of physicians to develop health scenarios and assessment rubrics for accuracy, safety, communication, context awareness, completeness, and escalation.
The company reports that all GPT-5.6 models outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, its evaluation for challenging health tasks.
OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT may still make mistakes and does not replace qualified medical professionals, encouraging users to verify important information with a healthcare provider.
Privacy and Data Controls: How to Connect Health Information And Access ItOpenAI states that Health is built with layered privacy and security safeguards. All ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, and information connected in Health receives additional encryption.
Connected medical records and Apple Health information, and conversations that use them, are excluded from foundation model training and ad targeting regardless of the user's model-training setting.
Conversations that do not use this data follow the user's standard model-training settings, adjustable in Settings, then Data Controls.
By default, ChatGPT requests permission before using connected records to personalize responses. Users can approve each request or choose to always allow access, which disables prompts, by adjusting Settings under Plugins and Health.
Users can disconnect Health information at any time in Health under Accounts. OpenAI states that data from a disconnected source is deleted from its systems within 30 days, though information already in conversation history remains until those conversations are deleted.
Memories are not created directly from connected medical records or Apple Health information. Users can use Temporary Chat or disable memory in Settings under Memory.
OpenAI states that before ChatGPT takes action in another connected plugin that could disclose Health information, additional safeguards verify that sharing matches the request, and some sensitive actions require confirmation.
Users who want responses based on their own data can connect Apple Health, supported medical records from US hospital systems, One Medical, or Function Health.
Once synced, users can ask questions anywhere in ChatGPT and add @Health to a message to explicitly request health context.
Health in ChatGPT is now available to US users aged 18 and older on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. OpenAI has not announced availability outside the US, support in Codex, or an Android release timeline.
Connected information may not always be complete or current. OpenAI advises users to verify important details with the original source and consult a healthcare provider for medical decisions.
