When it comes time to escape the noise of everyday life, there's no need to travel far to find somewhere to switch off in the idyllic North East countryside. And one tranquil retreat has left guests feeling like they are "miles from anywhere" - despite being just a few minutes' drive away from Teesside.
Fisherman's Cottage is a hideaway nestled within rolling farmland that offers peace and quiet in a luxurious environment complete with its own private hot tub. Perfectly suited for a family break with three bedrooms and three en-suite bathrooms accommodating up to six people, visitors here have said they enjoyed observing the wildlife from its windows, as well as discovering all that the local area has to offer.
Available on holidaycottages.co.uk and starting from £1,236 for a seven-night break, Fisherman's Cottage still has a handful of available dates during the school summer holidays at the time of writing - although, as with most other staycation options, it's significantly more expensive in the summer, with seven nights in August priced at £2,016. For those hoping to save some money by arranging a visit in the autumn or winter, there's a wood burner in the lounge and underfloor heating throughout to keep visitors warm.

During the summer months, guests can make use of the garden, complete with a barbecue and sun loungers to soak up the sunshine. Throughout the year, the stunning countryside vistas are guaranteed to impress visitors, while a wealth of indoor and outdoor attractions nearby ensure days out that cater for all ages, reports Chronicle Live.
Located just a 10-minute drive from Darlington, Fisherman's Cottage boasts an enviable position near three spectacular beauty spots: the North Pennines National Landscape, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park are all within an hour's drive. Providing guests with abundant opportunities to immerse themselves in nature, the Durham Heritage Coast is also just 40 minutes away by car for even more magnificent scenery.
Book a stay at Fisherman's Cottage

With room for up to six guests, this County Durham cottage is a 10-minute drive outside of Darlington and offers countryside views and a private hot tub.
For those who would rather stay in a hotel, Darlington itself offers several alternatives. According to Booking.com reviews, the top-rated choice is The Devonport, an 18th-century hotel and restaurant with views across unspoilt countryside beside the River Tees.
Alternatively, for a one-of-a-kind alternative elsewhere in the county, there is Scargill Castle, a property more than 450 years old that has been transformed into a holiday cottage following its restoration from a dilapidated ruin. Accommodating two guests, this dog-friendly retreat is perfectly suited for couples or solo travellers seeking to step back in time with a stay surrounded by picturesque countryside, as reported by Teesside Live last month.

Meanwhile, guests at Fisherman's Cottage have been full of praise following their stays. One visitor remarked: "The cottage is as described - five-star, clean, well equipped and amazing location - it's about 2.5 miles off the main road, it's wonderful! Apart from the owner's house, pheasants, hares, squirrels, etc., you have found the perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy!
Another guest enthused: "Beautiful cottage in a lovely area. Feels like you are miles from anywhere but all amenities are within a 15-minute drive. Best equipped place we have stayed, with hosts so welcoming and helpful."
A third reviewer echoed: "If you are looking for somewhere that is totally relaxing and comfortable, quiet and peaceful, in a beautiful tranquil setting, then Fisherman's Cottage is for you. Add in the hot tub and a roaring fire... it was perfect! Our friends and I had a really wonderful weekend. Thank you to the lovely owners too, who made us very welcome."
While a fourth added: "Excellent cottage in glorious setting, peaceful when relaxing in the hot tub."
With seven reviews to date, guests are yet to leave any negative feedback. One thing worth noting, however, is that Fisherman's Cottage is unfortunately not dog-friendly, so families hoping to bring their four-legged friends along for the trip will need to look elsewhere.
