Lasers and cannons are already in space: Russia’s response to NATO’s new weapons has become known

U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink for the first time officially acknowledged the deployment of American weapons in orbit. Military expert Yuri Knutov, in an exclusive comment to aif.ru, explained what this weapon is, what it is designed for, what targets it hits, and how Russia might respond.
""The deployment of weapons in orbit is the beginning of the implementation of the "Golden Dome" program, " Knutov said.
According to him, the program has two components. The ground-based part includes THAAD missile defense systems, Aegis systems, and partially Patriot systems, as well as silo-based interceptors located in three regions within the United States. The space-based component, the expert noted, is only just beginning to be deployed.
“It includes spacecraft equipped with ‘space‑to‑space’ missiles, spacecraft carrying combat lasers, electromagnetic guns, and electronic warfare systems — essentially a whole set of tools designed to target enemy satellites or directly engage ballistic missiles heading towards the United States,” Knutov explained.
He reminded that, in accordance with the program approved by US President Donald Trump and the funds allocated for this purpose, the implementation of decisions regarding the use of weapons based on new physical principles has begun.
“The Pentagon demonstrated a 100 kW combat laser and an electromagnetic cannon at an exhibition about two to three months ago. Therefore, it is quite possible that some elements of this system are already beginning to be deployed directly in space,” the expert said.
In his view, the delivery of heavy and large components, such as lasers, will be carried out using Elon Musk’s Starship rockets, which are being promoted as spacecraft for the first expedition to Mars.
"Perhaps, "he said," a Mars expedition will take place sometime, but today, I believe, these rockets will be used primarily by the Pentagon to deploy the space component of the Golden Dome project."
Regarding the objectives, the expert clarified: “This system is primarily aimed at destroying reconnaissance satellites or disabling ballistic missiles.”
When asked what Russia could do in response, Knutov reminded that the Soviet Union had also been engaged in similar programs.
“In the 1960s, we had projects for satellite destroyers. At Baikonur, there were silos where rockets with the corresponding devices were kept; these could be launched and used to hit spacecraft in space. We even conducted such exercises, shooting down an old satellite,” he said.
However, according to him, later an agreement was reached between the United States and the USSR to freeze the deployment of weapons in space.
"But in recent years, the Americans have withdrawn from the anti-missile defense, START, and INF treaties and practically destroyed the basis for non-deployment of weapons in outer space. By adopting the "Golden Dome" program, they openly declared that space is becoming their priority, " Knutov stated.
He also noted that Russia is preserving the groundwork laid during the Soviet era.
“The S‑500 conducted a firing exercise against the ‘Tselina’ satellite, which was still under development in the USSR. We demonstrated that we can engage such vehicles. During the Soviet era, ‘cosmos‑to‑cosmos’ missiles were developed; they were intended to be deployed on the ‘Almaz’ orbital stations, and there was also a cannon there, which was used in the demonstration firing exercises. I believe that these developments will be revived on a new technological basis and will allow us to keep up with the United States,” Knutov concluded.
Earlier, the official spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, revealed the true purpose of the US Air Force’s statements about orbital weapons.
