Welcome to the “Ocean of Stars”, one of the first stunning images released by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Every zoom reveals countless stars, distant galaxies and hidden cosmic treasures just waiting to be explored.
Located atop Cerro Pachón in Chile, the Rubin Observatory is home to the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy. Over the next decade, it will repeatedly map the southern sky, capturing an unprecedented time series of the universe. From the discovery of new asteroids and comets to the study of dark matter, dark energy and exploding stars, Rubin is set to transform our understanding of the cosmos.
