Pilots from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have begun test flights in the systems integration lab (SIL) for the Bell 525 Relentless, as the aircraft continues down its long path towards certification.
“We’ve never been closer that we are right now [to certification],” Jeff Schloesser, senior vice president, strategic pursuits, Bell, told journalists during a briefing at the Farnborough International Airshow in the U.K.
“The SIL or the simulation capability involves not only a flight simulator, but also the ability to inject issues into the cockpit and then have the FAA pilots react to that and then have that recorded and then judged,” he said.
Earlier this year, Mike Deslatte, senior vice president for the Bell 525 program, told media that two tests remained to be completed for certification — both of which would take place in the Relentless Advanced Systems Integration Lab (RASIL).
The first is failure mode regression testing, while the second involved the final software for the aircraft.
Schloesser said the RASIL testing would be a lengthy process, but that Bell hopes it will be completed in mid-August.
After that, function and reliability testing will begin — which will be the last part of certification process. Bell is also working on kits that aren’t required for initial type certification (TC), but will broaden its capability for operators.
“Fifty percent of what we’re doing right now is beyond TC,” said Schloesser. “We’re working hard on icing and cold weather operations. We had one aircraft in Yellowknife [Northwest Territories] last year [for cold weather], and one in Marquette [Michigan] working with the U.S. Army systems for icing.”
