Even among the putrid SSD and RAM pricing issues, there are still some apparent "deals" to be had - some are much better than others I may add - but at the end of the day, it is a modern mid-range PC with all the bits you could need to play games and such at 1440p or even 4K with upscaling. Let's take a closer look.
The CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 7700 - £230 (was £350)
There aren't actually that many CPU deals to be had during Spring Deal Days at the moment, with prices quite stable across Intel and AMD (the only one I can find marked as a 'Spring Sale' deal is a very expensive Intel i9-14900K). One of the only reasonable discounts going at the moment is on this Ryzen 7 7700 non-X chip; the same as in the last Spring Sale PC.
As with other non-X chips, this 7700 features a small clock speed difference against the 7700X, giving you marginally worse performance - testing elsewhere puts this at between one and two percent, so both chips are virtually identical. The benefit to this version is that it comes with a stock Wraith Prism cooler (unlike the -X variant), which should be more than enough for its 65W TDP, and means we don't have to spend any more money than necessary on CPU cooling.
Otherwise, this is an 8-core/16 thread chip that makes for an excellent option for both gaming and content creation workloads, as we've found in our testing of the -X variant. In actual fact, due to the single chiplet design, it actually offers as good, if not better gaming performance than the higher-end non-X3D chips AMD offers. In addition, while its content creation scores aren't as potent, they remain strong.
Building on AM5 is also future-proof for any further upgrades you wish to make down the line, be it to any of the Ryzen 9000 chips (if you want to), or anything that comes later on.
The GPU - Asus Dual RTX 5070 - £500 (was £626)
Surprisingly one of the easier reductions to find was on a GPU, and this isn't a form of price gouging, unlike with the RAM and SSDs a little further down this list. What we've got is a brand new RTX 5070, complete with a free copy of Resident Evil Requiem, in Asus Dual flavour for £500 - not bad really.
To delve into some numbers, the RTX 5070 in the DF review was found to constitute a good value mid-range GPU for 1440p gaming, with performance that put it a little ahead of the RTX 4070 Super - in Alan Wake 2 with RT enabled, the 5070 hit 36fps, while the 4070 Super managed 34fps. It's a similar margin in Cyberpunk 2077, while the 4070 Super actually pulled ahead in Avatar.
The key difference with the 5070 over its predecessor is not only its lower MSRP that helps it from a value standpoint, but there is the 'benefit' of DLSS 4 (and subsequently DLSS 4.5) with its multi-frame-gen tech. Of course, there is some latency involved with this, but it can still spit out playable results in the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 in our testing if you want to take advantage of higher refresh rate monitors and such.
You could spend more on a 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti, although it would be a fair bit more, of course.
The SSD - Crucial P310 4TB SSD - £300 (was £360)
And now we come to the first fiddly bit - the SSD. The choice to go for a huge 4TB Crucial P310 is more from a value per TB perspective than for outright price. A 2TB Gen 4 drive is going to run you around £200-£250, so getting a 4TB one with double the storage for £100 more at the most seems like a bit of a no brainer for future-proofing and bulk storage powers.
The P310 has often been one of the better value PCIe Gen 4 SSDs historically, and that doesn't necessarily change too much. It's plenty fast enough for most tasks, with speeds up to 7100MB/s reads and 6000MB/s writes, which are not to be sniffed at for fast data transfer and access to files. Moreover, random IOPS numbers of 1M reads and 1.2M writes mean very brisk boot times into games and the OS.
Having such a hefty capacity also means you'll be able to get a boatload of games and locally stored media alongside a Windows install without so much as breaking a sweat. Truth be told, I am nearly running out of space, but nearly 1TB of it is locally stored hi-res music. Your mileage will of course vary.
The RAM - Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL36 32GB - £316 (was £482)
Against other PC build articles in the past, the RAM has been swapped around a little, as I've opted to go for a Corsair Vengeance kit that benefits from both a sensible 32GB capacity, snappy 6000MT/s transfer rates and tighter CL30 timings that are suitable for overclocking, and fit the optimal RAM spec for AM5 chips such as the 7700 we're using.
We've seen DDR5-6000 RAM have an impact in offering an enviable performance boost in some titles in our CPU testing in the likes of both Cyberpunk 2077 and Flight Simulator 2020 against the base-spec DDR5-4800, and this Corsair kit provides the chance for you to get some extra performance while also giving you a fair amount of capacity. This kit's tighter CL36 timings also mean it's suitable for overclocking, too.
The problem, of course, is price - this used to be a kit that'd go for well under £100, although prices have risen nearly as high as £500 for this kit in recent times. The only reason it's here is because it's a genuine reduction for the Spring Sale back down to just over £300.
The Motherboard - Gigabyte B850 Eagle Wifi 6E - £135 (was £150)
Weirdly, finding a motherboard hasn't been the hardest task this time around, as we found this feature-rich Gigabyte B850 Eagle Wifi 6E model for £135 with relative ease on the Amazon deals pages. Usually, it can be quite fiddly to pair a CPU and motherboard during these sales events.
It's an ATX motherboard, and comes with all the things you could want from a modern choice, including PCIe 5.0 x16 for your GPU and three M.2 slots. One of these is a Gen 5 one too for brisk speeds, plus there are two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots for adding more in if you need down the line. RAM support is DDR5, with speeds of up to 8200MT/s and overclocking if you want to go mad.
On-board Wifi is present with Wifi 6E, plus the port selection on the rear includes Gigabit Ethernet, a fast USB-C and a vast array of eight USB-A ports of varying speeds. You get HDMI and DP for your CPU's integrated graphics if you need it and a PS/2 port.
The PSU - Corsair RM750e (2025) - £75 (was £105)
To supply power to the whole PC, we've gone for something with some headroom over the minimum recommended wattage for the RTX 5070, opting for a reliable Corsair RM750e (2025) unit that's currently £75 in the Spring Sale.
It's a reliable Cybenetics Gold rated unit, which is is testament to its efficiency, and also provides peace of mind, too. Inside, it also features a 120mm fan with a specially designed fan curve for especially quiet operation. The fact this is also a fully modular PSU also helps for cable management, and to allow for better airflow.
750W of power gives you enough oomph for running virtually anything, apart from a select few top-tier components. It's actually the recommended minimum specs for AMD's RX 9070 XT and Nvidia's RTX 5070 Ti, rather than the 5070. This PSU is also fully ATX 3.1 compliant, so to provide enough power for PCIe 5.1, which is handy, while the RM-e units are A-tier rated on the Cultists PSU Tier List (formerly of LTT Forums), if it's any further proof of their reliability.
The Fans - Arctic P12 (5 Pack) - £20 (was £23)
Admittedly, the case fans here are simply if you wanted to add more fans to the stock ones in the case we've picked out. These Arctic P12s are here for their solid value for money, as well as decent airflow for such a cheap set. Five (!) fans for £20 isn't really to be sniffed at.
The Case - MSI MAG FORGE 112R - £50 (was £65)
The case I've opted for is a more inexpensive box from MSI that's garnered a decent amount of reviews from the retailer and seems to represent great value for money for the more modest £50 asking price - it's the MSI MAG FORGE 112R.
This case supports everything from Mini ITX all the way up to ATX-sized systems, and comes with four 120mm ARGB-enabled fans pre-installed. Three of them come in the front for intake, with a further exhaust at the rear. There is room for up to six fans, presumably adding two to the top. The top and bottom also come with dust filters to keep it out, with the top one being magnetic.
The MAG FORGE 112R also seems like quite a roomy case interally, with GPUs up to 330m long and larger CPU coolers up to 160mmm high, and we're well covered with those dimensions with the chosen components here. For controlling RGB, MSI provides a built-in controller with 26 cyclable LED effects if you want it. As for front I/O, we've got a power button, headphone and mic jacks and two USB-A ports. Not the most feature-rich, but it gets the job done for the price.
The Finished Build - Price - £1625So, there you have it - that's the finished build for you - here's a PC PartPicker list of components if that's easier - although their prices aren't all correct, hence the difference at the end. Nonetheless, this is a competent system for 1440p RT gaming with a speedy CPU and GPU combo, as well as solid RAM, a snappy SSD, and decent room for upgrades down the line elsewhere.
