Many Bengaluru professionals struggle to save despite earning good salaries, and the reason may not be low income but everyday spending habits. An Instagram creator has highlighted five common money leaks that quietly drain monthly earnings and has also shared one simple question that has him make better spending decisions. Here's how you can do it too.
Many people believe that earning a higher salary is the answer to saving more money. But for many professionals in Bengaluru, that doesn't always happen. Despite monthly incomes crossing ₹1 lakh, some still struggle to save, while others earning much less manage to build a healthy financial cushion. According to Bengaluru-based content creator Akshay CN, the biggest reason isn't always income.
Akshay says that it is the small spending habits that quietly eat away at salaries every month. In one of his recent Instagram posts, he explained that the real issue is often the money people spend without even noticing it.
Akshay pointed out that many people wait for a salary hike before thinking seriously about savings. But after interacting with people across Bengaluru, he noticed a different pattern.
He wrote, "The problem isn't your salary... it's the money you don't even notice spending."
He further added, "Most people think, 'I'll start saving when my salary increases.' But after speaking to so many people in Bengaluru, I noticed something surprising... Some people earning ₹40,000 have savings. Others earning ₹1 lakh+ are still waiting for month-end. The difference isn't always income. It's awareness."
According to him, understanding everyday spending habits matters more than simply earning a bigger paycheck.
Food delivery apps make life easier, especially after long office hours. But frequent ordering can quietly become one of the biggest monthly expenses.
Akshay wrote, "Food delivery isn't expensive... Making it a daily habit is."
An occasional order may not hurt the budget, but making it part of the daily routine can significantly increase monthly expenses.
2. Frequent cab ridesMany office-goers rely on cabs for convenience. A single ride may not seem costly, but repeated trips throughout the month add up quickly.
As Akshay put it, "A ₹300 cab ride doesn't hurt... Doing it 20 times a month does."
Choosing public transport or planning trips whenever possible can help reduce unnecessary spending.
3. Shopping because of discountsSales often create the feeling of saving money, even when purchases are not needed.
Akshay explained, "Sales don't save money... Buying only what you need does."
Buying something simply because it is discounted can still become an unnecessary expense if it wasn't required in the first place.
4. Unused subscriptionsStreaming platforms, fitness apps and digital services usually charge small monthly fees. Individually they may look harmless, but together they can become a noticeable expense.
He wrote, "Subscriptions feel small... Until you realise you're paying for apps you don't even open."
Reviewing recurring payments regularly and cancelling services that are no longer being used can make a difference.
5. Weekend spending without a budgetCafes, restaurants and outings are a normal part of city life. But spending freely every weekend without planning can slowly reduce savings.
Akshay said, "Weekend plans aren't the problem... Going out every weekend without a budget is."
Setting aside a fixed amount for leisure can help people enjoy weekends without affecting long-term financial goals.
The one question that changed his spending habitsAkshay also shared a simple habit that has helped him become more mindful before making purchases.
He wrote, "Before buying anything, I ask myself one simple question: 'Will I still be happy that I bought this 30 days from now?' That one question has helped me save more money than any budgeting app."
