A former winner of Love Island has put forward that ITV should consider making some big changes in the show's rules for future editions.

ITV's 13th season of the reality dating series wrapped up last week, although fans are still gripped by the aftermath. Lorenzo Alessi and Julia Majchrzak came out top of the public vote and walked away with the £50,000 prize.

However, another former winner has now opened up about what viewers don't see on camera from the villa. Cara De La Hoyde was on the second season back in 2016 and was victorious alongside Nathan Massey.

One of the show's few success stories, the pair are not still together after all this time but are married with children. Cara was 26 at the time she was on the show, she suggests that it could be time that producers consider raising the minimum age for prospective Islanders.

Speaking to Zingo Bingo, she said: "It wouldn’t be a bad idea to make it over 21s. Love Island is a huge show and it’s a big thing to do. There’s a lot that comes after it. I also think it would be great to move the age to older. Sometimes I feel weird watching all these 21 year olds as a 36 year old!"

While the stars of this year's series ranged in age, no one was aged 30 or older. The eldest of the cast was Lola, Lorenzo, Tommy and George, at 28.

Meanwhile this series, unlike previous iterations, there were no teenagers. One of the youngest stars to ever feature on the show appeared when they were just 18, but the youngest age this time around was 21. Kavan, Mica and Robyn were the babies of the group at this age.

The most common age amongst the group was 25, with seven stars being that age. According to ITV's website, all applicants should be at least 18 years old.

Cara also warned this year's line-up that adjusting to life on the outside was similar to post-lockdown life. She explained: "It’s definitely an adjustment.

"Being around crowds of people after getting used to life in the villa is strange. I think it’s like when we were first able to go out again after Covid. It feels weird at first but you soon get used to it."

The reality star also admitted that a lot has changed on Love Island since she was in the villa. However, there are some aspects Cara would not mind making a comeback.

This includes the smoking area and airing raunchier scenes. Cara said: "I know they won’t because they want to be seen as BAFTA-worthy television. But I’m telling you, bring it back and the drama will follow!"
