If you’ve been learning Italian for months or years and still can’t hold a proper conversation, it’s not your fault. Almost everything you’ve been told about language learning has been a lie. So, in this video I’ll share 4 simple changes that helped me and over 3,000 of my students break through the plateau.

First, I’m going to show you one of the biggest reasons you’re not improving and what to do instead. Imagine someone hands you a guitar and says, “Play your favourite song.” Unless you’re a guitarist, what are the chances you can play a single note? Pretty slim. Learning Italian is exactly the same.
You’re told to study the grammar and eventually you’ll be able to speak, but that’s a lie. Finishing a textbook, building up a streak on an app, and watching Italian films are all what we call “passive learning.” It’s like watching a guitarist play your favourite song. But if you want to be the musician performing, then you need to practise playing the song, just like you need to practise speaking Italian. This is what we call “active learning.”
So tip number 1 is: from today, every time you study, you must also speak Italian. Take what you just read or heard and say it out loud. Describe something in the room, talk to a friend or to yourself in Italian, or record a voice note. Do this consistently and you’ll actually start improving.
Next, I’m going to share the single study habit that separates learners who improve from those who go around in circles. Imagine a gardener trying to grow a garden. Every week he plants new seeds in a new patch of ground, but he doesn’t water the seeds he planted last week. He just keeps planting new ones. Six months later, he’s frustrated when almost nothing has grown.
That is exactly what traditional language learning is like. Each week you come to class and learn something new, but you realise you can’t remember what you learned the previous week. So you have to play catch-up, and by the time you’ve refreshed your memory, the class has already moved on to the next new topic. You’re told you have a memory problem, that you need to try harder or concentrate more, but that’s not true.
You forget because of something called the forgetting curve. Within 24 hours of learning something new, your brain has already forgotten up to 70% of it because it deletes information it hasn’t been asked to use again. Just like the gardener who never went back to water the seeds he planted, if you don’t regularly review what you’ve studied, you won’t remember anything.
So tip number 2 is: regularly review what you have already learned. This is called spaced repetition and it’s the only way you’re guaranteed to remember. Keep reviewing your notes before your brain forgets them, and continue until the information moves into long-term memory and stays there permanently. Reviewing is not extra work. Review is the work.

Next, I’m going to show you the dirty secret behind the most popular language learning tools and the method that actually helps you improve your speaking. Imagine your favourite language app. You build up a streak, get a hit of dopamine, and feel like you’re improving as you move up the leaderboard. But when you try to speak Italian, all you know are random words and phrases you’ll never actually use, like Il gatto è nel forno (the cat is in the oven).
Textbooks are no different. They start by teaching you the alphabet, names of body parts, colours, and eventually the present tense. By covering so many disconnected topics, they aren’t designed to help you with your specific goals or real-life conversations.
So tip number 3 is: focus only on learning the grammar and vocabulary you actually need. Start by writing down all the situations where you want to speak Italian, then ask yourself: what 20% of words and phrases do I need to communicate in those situations? Use this to create your own personalised syllabus of verbs, vocabulary, and grammar. Don’t follow an app or textbook blindly. Make your learning personal. This is the core of my 80/20 method.
Tip 4: Measure What Actually Matters
Next, I’m going to show you the most important thing to ensure your Italian improves. Most learners measure progress based on streaks in an app, completing a course, or finishing a textbook, but none of these guarantees your Italian is actually improving.
Imagine someone who decides they want to get fit. They go to the gym three times a week, and after three months, they’re frustrated because the scales have barely moved. They think nothing has changed, but they’ve only looked at one metric. They didn’t track how much muscle they gained or notice that they can now walk up stairs without stopping when they couldn’t before. They were making progress the whole time but didn’t see it because they never defined what “fit” actually means.
So tip number 4 is: define exactly what you want to be able to do in Italian and be as specific as possible. A great way to do this is using S.M.A.R.T goals, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Instead of saying “I want to be fluent in Italian,” set clear goals like: “In six weeks I want to be able to book a hotel room in Italian on the phone without switching to English.” Or “In four weeks I want to have a five-minute conversation about my family without freezing.” Or “By the end of the month I want to talk about my holiday plans using the future tense without stopping to think about the grammar.”
With S.M.A.R.T goals, your learning becomes focused and measurable. Ask yourself now: have you actually hit a plateau, or do you just think you have?
