The final jewel set in Saadiyat’s Cultural District is just months away from opening

Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District is about to welcome its final masterpiece: the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The capital’s vibrant cultural hub already boasts the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and the Zayed National Museum. And if you’ve been waiting for an update on the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, we have some big news for you: The museum is set to open its doors on December 11, 2026.

The news about the world-class institution opening at the end of the year was shared by Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi via their official X account.

The post states, ‘Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, a landmark museum of modern and contemporary art, will open on 11 December 2026. The Frank Gehry-designed institution will serve as a cornerstone of the Saadiyat Cultural District, offering new perspectives on art from the 1960s to the present.’

According to His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, the Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, ‘Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a defining moment in our cultural journey. The museum is shaped by the emirate’s long-held conviction that culture is the most enduring bridge between peoples, and a building block for forward-looking societies’

Here’s what we know so far

When it does open, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be just the fourth museum in the world to bear the Guggenheim name. It joins the flagship Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy.

Guggenheim museums are renowned for having distinct, iconic architecture at each location rather than a unified style. Each building is designed as a masterpiece to reflect its local context. Renderings of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi showcase the masterful architectural vision of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry.

Gehry was also the architect behind the Guggenheim Bilbao, selected for his ability to create transformative cultural landmarks.

As construction of the museum reaches its completion, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will transform the concrete grey into an exterior boldly composed of steel in shades of silver and gold, concrete, wood, and glass.

The groundbreaking, avant-garde architecture stands apart from the stark white facades of its neighbouring cultural landmarks, echoing the golden dunes of the desert. The design even incorporates traditional and sustainable elements within the design, such as wind towers and covered courtyards, blending modern architecture with a nod to local heritage.

It represents an inventive 21st-century museum design introducing a different visitor experience and an innovative way to view contemporary art. With a surface area of approximately 80,000 square metres, the museum in Abu Dhabi will be the largest Guggenheim in the world, strengthening the UAE’s capital position as a global centre for arts and culture.

Inside Frank Gehry’s striking design, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will house 30 galleries dedicated to modern and contemporary art, displaying works from the 1960s onwards. The museum’s exhibitions will span painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and new media, with galleries arranged around themes rather than chronology to offer visitors a fresh perspective on art from different cultures and generations.

Can’t wait for it to open? For now… we can glimpse at the museum’s progress from just outside the Louvre Abu Dhabi… and wait.
