NSF NOIRLab, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, has released its 2025 Year in Review. Designed to provide a comprehensive and transparent account of NOIRLab’s successes in 2025, this new publication chronicles a year of major discoveries, technological progress, and expanding global engagement across the organization’s Programs, projects, and scientific communities.

The report showcases breakthrough science from the organization, ranging from the discovery of low-mass planets orbiting Barnard’s Star to new results from the U.S. Department of Energy-funded Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which suggest that dark energy may evolve over cosmic time. The new publication also highlights the first science enabled by early data from NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, offering a preview of the transformational discoveries expected once the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) begins in 2026.
Among the featured stories are behind-the-scenes accounts of Rubin Observatory’s “First Look” campaign, including the global watch parties, media events, image production, and interactive tools developed to help the public explore Rubin’s first images. The publication also includes stories from the International Gemini Observatory, profiles of NOIRLab staff and researchers, and reflections on the increasingly important role of data-intensive astronomy and real-time discovery systems.
The annual report also documents NOIRLab’s continued investment in facilities, instrumentation, software, and community engagement. Highlights include the growth of Astro Data Lab and ANTARES, expanded public visit and outreach programs, and the creation of a Data Management and Software unit to prepare for the next generation of large astronomical surveys. Accompanying these articles is a report on NOIRLab’s commitment to financial and management responsibilities, detailing how NSF and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) work with NOIRLab to support a foundation for discovery.

NSF NOIRLab, the U.S. National Science Foundation center for ground-based optical-infrared astronomy, operates the International Gemini Observatory (a facility of NSF, NRC–Canada, ANID–Chile, MCTIC–Brazil, MINCyT–Argentina, and KASI–Republic of Korea), NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), and NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory (in cooperation with DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory).
