СпутникиРНSpaceXРоскосмосNASATogether with the other Maunakea Observatories (MKOs) and a collection of STEM organizations, the International Gemini Observatory, funded in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by NSF NOIRLab, celebrated the annual AstroDay Hilo on Saturday, 2 May 2026. ʻOhana (families) of all ages were invited to the free event held at Prince Kuhio Mall in Hilo, Hawai‘i.
This event is organized by the University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy (IfA). Carolyn Kaichi, Outreach Coordinator at IfA Hilo, who has organized AstroDay for the last 11 years, was recognized on stage with multiple lei for her many years of stellar contributions to the local community before her retirement this summer.
Following opening ʻoli (chants) and speeches, the Maunakea Coin Contest Award Ceremony took place at the AstroDay center stage. Hawaiʻi Island students from grades 1 through 12 received prizes for their Maunakea Coin Contest art submissions. The grand prize winner, Joefrey Trez Canete from Pāhoa High and Intermediate School, won a telescope, and his design was made into thousands of aluminum coins that were distributed at Astroday. Coins will also be available at future MKO events, like stargazing and Journey Through the Universe.
The Gemini Observatory booth featured activities highlighting Ua ʻŌhia Lani, Gemini North’s 25th-anniversary image, and its unique story involving local high school students and the Project Hōkūlani internship. Attendees made magnets and learned about the life cycle of high-mass stars by creating bookmark tassels. Gemini staff engaged with hundreds of attendees and answered numerous questions about the cosmos and the observatory’s programs.

NSF NOIRLab, the U.S. National Science Foundation center for ground-based optical-infrared astronomy, operates the International Gemini Observatory (a facility of NSF, NRC–Canada, ANID–Chile, MCTIC–Brazil, MINCyT–Argentina, and KASI–Republic of Korea), NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the Community Science and Data Center (CSDC), and NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory (in cooperation with DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). It is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with NSF and is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona.
The scientific community is honored to have the opportunity to conduct astronomical research on I’oligam Du’ag (Kitt Peak) in Arizona, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i, and on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachón in Chile. We recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence of I’oligam Du’ag to the Tohono O’odham Nation, and Maunakea to the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) community.
