A heat advisory goes into effect Thursday and continues through Friday for most of the tri-state area.
High temperatures will be in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees beginning Thursday. That’s about five degrees above normal.
What’s notable about the next several days is the high humidity that we’ll experience. The dew point, a direct measure of atmospheric moisture, will hover in the mid 70s, which is extremely high for this region. That will make it feel oppressive outside.
The temperature, combined with the high dew points, will result in heat indices near 100 degrees both Thursday and Friday.
The heat advisory may be extended past Friday. The heat doesn’t let up much until we get into next week. Expect the heat index to peak in the mid to upper 90s through Tuesday.
Along with the heat, expect a few showers and storms to bubble up during the afternoon and evening hours. There is a Level 1 risk for severe weather west of New York City. The biggest threat will be damaging straight-line wind.
In addition, some of the storms could produce heavy downpours, so there is a low risk of flash flooding, too.
