A popular South End wine bar will serve nonalcoholic drinks instead of wine in its signature porrón pours moving forward after Boston’s Licensing Board suspended its liquor license for three days. 

The board voted Thursday to suspend Barcelona Wine Bar’s license after determining the restaurant served alcohol to seven underage patrons during a May inspection and police detectives observed a bartender pouring wine from a traditional porrón into a customer’s mouth while standing on the bar. 

A porrón is a traditional Spanish glass vessel designed for communal drinking without touching the spout. 

As part of the agreement, Barcelona Wine Bar said it will continue the communal pouring tradition using a mixture of juice and soda instead of wine. The restaurant will also refrain from serving it from the bar, and will instead serve it from the ground or, if elevated, from a chair. 

“Barcelona Wine Bar is an upscale traditional Spanish establishment that takes its responsibility as a liquor license holder very seriously,” said Attorney Tyler Henseler from Upton, Connell, and Devlin on behalf of the restaurant during a Tuesday violations hearing. 

He continued, “The multiple incidents that occurred on May 10, 2026, received their full attention and were handled with a diligent internal investigation and swift repercussions for the employee involved.” 

Barcelona Wine Bar also has locations in Brookline and Cambridge and over 20 locations elsewhere in the country.

The internal investigation at the 525 Tremont St. location, Henseler said, found that one underage person was not drinking alcohol but produced a fake ID when asked by police. He was not sure why. 

However, the police detectives at the hearing said the person had an alcoholic drink in front of them, even if they didn’t order one. 

As for the six underage drinkers at another table, video showed that the waiter checked their IDs but did not scan them, as per restaurant policy. 

Police added that even though some were verified IDs, from family or friends, none of the patrons looked like the pictures on them. 

As a result, Kristen Plotts, the regional director who oversees the South End location, said that the restaurant ordered more scanners and updated their ID policy to be more thorough. 

During the voting hearing on Thursday, board member Keeana Saxon said, “We are seeing failures on all fronts,” referring to the employees overlooking the fake IDs and not scanning them properly. “These were out of state, so they should have asked for back-ups.”
