I-5 reopens, evacuations still in effect for brush fire near LA-Kern County line

Дата публикации: 07-08-2026 15:53:11

A smoky brush fire near the Los Angeles-Kern County line ballooned to more than 1,000 acres Friday, triggering an hours-long closure on Interstate 5 and evacuations in the Gorman area.
The Ridge Fire — now 1,057 acres — was reported in the northwestern LA County community at around 2:45 p.m. amid high temperatures and dry conditions. Less than two hours later, the blaze had jumped the I-5, north of California State Route 138, and continued burning on both sides of the freeway, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Authorities issued an evacuation order and warnings for the areas surrounding the fire. A shelter for evacuees and small pets was established at the Castaic Sports Complex community room, located at 31230 Castaic Road.
No structures were damaged as of Friday evening.

The 5 Freeway was shut down at Frazier Mountain Park Road on the south side and at Smokey Bear Road on the north side. During the closure, aerial footage from NewsChopper4 showed a major traffic backup, with some cars making U-turns on the freeway to avoid the delays. All lanes were back open by around 8:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
A smoke advisory was also in effect as thick white smoke impacted the area around Gorman. That advisory, issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, was set to expire at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Three water-dropping helicopters were expected to remain throughout the night.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
This is a developing story.
