An aggregate extraction and processing facility north of Silverthorne is looking to renew its conditional use permit with Summit County, but neighboring residents have raised concerns. The Lower Blue Planning Commission will have a public hearing on the permit application Aug. 20.

Quikrete Construction Materials operates the Maryland Creek Ranch mining and processing facility and is looking to renew the permit for 15 years. It was last renewed in 2016, and the facility has operated under several companies since 1996, according to application filings.

Over 30 individuals and groups have filed written public comments about the project. Some have shown support, stating the facility provides a local resource for construction materials like concrete and asphalt in Summit County.

Several comments criticizing the permit renewal have come from residents of Summit Sky Ranch, a neighborhood about a mile north of the facility which sits just inside the border of Silverthorne. Their comments mention concerns about noise, dust, environmental health and the health of Summit Sky Ranch residents, among other issues.

Those looking to make written public comment must submit it before Aug. 13 in order for it to be included in the planning commission’s packet, according to Adrienne Saia Isaac, the Summit County communications director. Isaac wrote in a text that members of the public will be able to give verbal comments at the commission’s Aug. 20 meeting as well.

The commission’s meeting will be Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the Mt. Royal Room of 37 Peak One Drive in Frisco.
