When a show doubles its episode count following a well-earned renewal, our first instinct is pretty simple: hand them all over, immediately. But with network TV’s appointment viewing officially getting its own time to shine, Saturday Night Live UK is proving it’s better off making us wait for more. After Lorne Michaels’ Saturday Night Live franchise finally expanded this past spring overseas, SNL UK is returning with 12 episodes for Season 2. That alone is an admirable show of faith in a franchise spin-off that could have felt like an awkward copy-and-paste. But between its brilliant cast finding its own rhythm and sharp writing that gives it its edge, Sky has now given it room to grow without squeezing everything into one long, extensive sophomore run.

And that might be the network’s most creative strategy yet. Stretching Season 2 over a wider window between 2026 and 2027 gives SNL UK more chances to stay in the conversation, especially after segment drops that lead to viral snippets on social. Not to mention, it also gives its absurdly talented cast time to do their absurdly talented work outside the series — something that’s always been a bit trickier for the Americans. For a show already built around strong, comedic voices, that is not a problem to solve but rather a whole new shift in formula.

‘Saturday Night Live UK’ Doesn’t Need To Rush the Momentum It Has Already Built

As it was announced by Sky on Tuesday morning, the first half of Season 2’s schedule gives us a strong idea of how SNL UK plans to air those episodes. The show returns on September 12, with new episodes following on September 19 and 26. There is then one Saturday off before another three-week run on October 10, 17 and 24. The remaining six episodes will arrive in early 2027, but have yet to be announced. This strategy proves that SNL UK gets to make a comeback, disappear just long enough for us to miss it, organically build a new audience in that gap time, and then do it all over again while recharging its cast and writers, while leveling up on any major news developments.

This is exactly the fit needed for a show still finding its place on British TV. The original Saturday Night Live has spent more than 50 years working with a much bigger calendar on NBC, with its seasons stretching from fall into spring and taking shorter breaks along the way. But SNL UK doesn’t need to copy that part of its formula — at least not yet. Sky has already called the first season of the series its most talked-about show of the year, and doubling the order from an initial six (that turned into eight) to now a 12-episode run is a pretty loud vote of confidence.

As a series that is undoubtedly one of 2026’s best new shows, Saturday Night Live UK is one of the most daring, laugh-out-loud comedy entries this year, keeping things quite relaxed without ever overthinking its growing impact on popular culture. And it’s this schedule rollout that helps the series allow the sketch comedy to feel new again. Between new guests and musical guests, SNL UK’s momentum doesn’t have to mean being on TV every single week. Sometimes the best way to keep audiences wanting more is to make them wait for it.

‘SNL UK’s Schedule Gives Its Cast Room To Become Even Bigger

There is another major advantage to SNL UK not following the American show’s calendar too closely, and that’s in how the cast gets to have a life. The original Saturday Night Live is a beast in and of itself, and fitting another job in isn’t exactly easy. SNL’s Sarah Sherman recently described to Variety that her co-stars, Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang, managing to work on other projects while still doing the show as “the unthinkable.” At one point, Thompson was making his NBC sitcom Kenan, while Yang was flying back and forth to London to shoot Wicked. “[All] I’ve managed to squeeze out is a stand-up special — and that’s on my off time. It’s hard,” she told the publication regarding SNL’s episodic schedules.

With Sherman being on SNL for five years now, her experience with the production schedule makes the difference pretty clear, whereas SNL UK's less traditional schedule is a nice perk that speaks to the value between network and streaming — less is always more. But the British cast can now be part of a live sketch show without having to put the rest of their careers on pause for most of the year. And this is a cast that absolutely should be doing other things — Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young all came to SNL UK with careers and comic voices of their own. Magliano, for example, has been touring her comedy show Peach Fuzz, around SNL UK, with live dates continuing through the year and several in the U.S. in 2027.

The best part of splitting these 12 episodes into blocks is that the show doesn’t have to choose between having someone like Magliano on SNL UK and letting her be Ania Magliano everywhere else. That schedule could be a significant part of its formula, because if SNL has spent 50 years becoming famous for turning funny people into household names, SNL UK has those early makings with a talented cast that’ll build its own interpretation of that legacy through time.

The showrunners have done an incredible job of letting 11 very different (and diverse) performers keep the voices that made them worth being on the show in the first place. But now giving them room to tour, act, write, and become even bigger away from SNL UK only makes the group coming back together more exciting. After sharing laughs with them across eight episodes in Season 1, it’s clear the series doesn’t need this cast all to itself. Turns out, the wait might be worth it.
