Will Butler is an American musician, songwriter, and composer who has a net worth of $5 million. Will Butler is best known as a former member of Arcade Fire, the Grammy-winning indie rock band fronted by his older brother, Win Butler. Will joined Arcade Fire in 2003 and remained with the group through the recording of its 2022 album "We," performing keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion, and numerous other instruments.
During Butler's tenure, Arcade Fire released six studio albums and became one of the most commercially successful alternative rock bands of its generation. The group's 2010 album "The Suburbs" won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Butler has also enjoyed a significant career away from Arcade Fire. He received an Academy Award nomination with Owen Pallett for the score to the 2013 film "Her," released several solo albums, earned a master's degree in public policy, and wrote the original songs for the acclaimed stage play "Stereophonic." His work on "Stereophonic" earned him two Tony Award nominations.
Early Life and EducationWilliam Pierce Butler was born on October 6, 1982. He spent much of his childhood in The Woodlands, Texas, in a musical family that included his older brother Win.
Their mother, Liza Rey, was a musician whose parents were jazz bandleader Alvino Rey and Luise King of the King Sisters. Will and Win both attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.
Will later attended Northwestern University. Years into his professional music career, he returned to graduate school and earned a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University.
Arcade FireWill joined Arcade Fire in 2003 as the group prepared the material that became "Funeral." The lineup also included Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and eventually drummer Jeremy Gara.
"Funeral" became an international critical success, and Arcade Fire followed it with "Neon Bible," "The Suburbs," "Reflektor," "Everything Now," and "We."
Butler became particularly recognizable during the band's live shows, where members frequently switched instruments and he performed everything from synthesizer and bass to percussion.
Will left Arcade Fire at the end of 2021, although he had already completed his contributions to "We." He announced his departure publicly in March 2022, saying that both he and the band had changed over nearly 20 years and that it was time to pursue new projects.

Butler and composer Owen Pallett were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Spike Jonze's 2013 film "Her." The score was created in collaboration with Arcade Fire, but Butler and Pallett were the composers formally recognized by the Academy.
Will released his first solo studio album, "Policy," in 2015, followed by the live album "Friday Night" and the studio album "Generations" in 2020.
After leaving Arcade Fire, he formed Will Butler + Sister Squares. The group released a self-titled album in 2023.
"Stereophonic"One of Butler's most successful post-Arcade Fire projects came from the theater.
Playwright David Adjmi asked Butler to create original songs for "Stereophonic," a drama about a fictional 1970s rock band recording an album while its members' relationships unravel.
"Stereophonic" became a major Broadway success, receiving a record 13 Tony Award nominations for a play and winning five, including Best Play. Butler was personally nominated for Best Original Score and, alongside Justin Craig, Best Orchestrations.
The project opened a substantial new chapter in Butler's career as a composer outside the traditional record industry.
