Valve has updated the Steam pages for Lepton and FEX, two compatibility tools that will enable the upcoming Arm-based Steam Frame VR headset to run both PC and Android games.

These tools work with Proton to translate and execute software across different architectures and are expected to be essential for the Steam Frame’s functionality at launch. The headset uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 SoC and runs a SteamOS build based on Arch Linux.

Lepton and FEX do not yet have public Steam Store pages, but their update histories are available in the SteamDB archive.

How Lepton and FEX Will Power Steam Frame Compatibility

Lepton and FEX address separate aspects of software compatibility.

Lepton is expected to use the container-based Waydroid system to run Android applications on a full Linux distribution. This approach is similar to how Proton enables Windows games to run on Linux through Wine.

Initial references to Lepton appeared online in 2025, suggesting Valve was developing a significant Android compatibility solution.

FEX is an emulator that translates API calls and recompiles code from x86 applications into native Arm64 implementations. It aims to minimize emulation overhead and enhance performance.

FEX already supports a wide range of 32-bit and 64-bit x86 applications. It has also been promoted as a tool to use with Wine and Proton for running Windows games on Arm devices.

The Steam Deck will use a three-part compatibility system: Lepton manages Android games through its container-based approach, FEX translates x86-64 native code to Arm, and Proton enables Windows-based software to run on the Arm architecture.

The headset operates on a SteamOS build based on Arch Linux and uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 SoC. Valve financially supports the Arch Linux project. With Valve’s involvement in the FEX project, the emulator could achieve similar success to Proton in the Linux gaming market.

What Lepton and FEX Mean for the Steam Frame Launch

The public updates to Lepton and FEX suggest the Steam Frame launch is approaching. Valve previously announced a delay in the headset’s release due to a memory shortage. The recent updates are a sign that the launch is nearing, although Valve has not provided a new release date.

For users tracking the Steam Deck, the practical takeaways are that the headset is designed to run PC (Windows and Linux) and Android games using the combined Lepton, FEX, and Proton layers, rather than a single compatibility solution.

Compatibility will depend on FEX’s ability to translate individual x86 games to Arm, which will impact performance for each title.

Android game support via Lepton depends on the Waydroid container system operating within SteamOS.

Valve has not announced a final release date for the Steam Deck, published per-game compatibility ratings for FEX or Lepton, or provided details on the expected performance overhead of the translation layers on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 hardware.

Lepton and FEX still lack public Steam store pages. The previous delay was due to a memory shortage, but Valve has not confirmed whether component availability has improved enough to schedule a launch.
