Valve is expanding its Verified program beyond Steam Deck, and the new labels make the company’s next hardware push feel much closer. Steam Machine and Steam Frame are now getting their own compatibility checks, which means players will know whether a game works properly on the new devices without tweaking settings, changing controls, or searching for fixes.
The update matters more for Steam Frame, because Valve is making one thing very clear that this is not just a wireless PC VR headset.
Steam Frame is primarily designed for high-quality game streaming from a PC, but it is also a standalone SteamOS device that can run games directly on the headset.
You can also stream from your gaming PC when you want higher-end performance, but Steam Frame also has its own standalone mode for VR and non-VR titles.
Valve is now creating a separate “Steam Frame Standalone Verified” label so players know which games are ready for that on-device experience.
Valve says the goal is the same as Steam Deck Verified, which is to tell players what works well out of the box. That includes default graphics settings, readable text, UI scaling, and whether the default controller layout works properly.
| Device | What Valve is checking? | What you need to know? |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Portable PC play, controls, performance, UI readability | Already familiar to players and developers |
| Steam Machine | Living room SteamOS gaming with controller support and good defaults | Games that run well on Deck should usually work well here too |
| Steam Frame | Standalone headset play for VR and non-VR games | Shows which games can run directly on the headset without a PC |
Steam Machine should be the easier part of the program. It runs SteamOS, uses Proton for Windows games, and is roughly six times as powerful as Steam Deck.
Valve says the requirements are nearly identical to Steam Deck Verified, so games that already work well on Deck should work well on Steam Machine with no extra work.
Valve is also testing games that failed Deck verification because of CPU or GPU performance. Some of those titles may still pass on Steam Machine because the hardware is much stronger.
Steam Frame is the more unusual deviceValve describes it as a standalone VR headset built mainly for low-latency streaming from a PC, but it also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences.
The headset runs SteamOS, supports SteamVR and OpenXR, and can work with Windows and Linux PC titles, native ARM64 apps, and Android-based APKs.
The Verified label for Steam Frame focuses only on standalone mode. That means a game being marked Steam Frame Standalone Verified is not about how well it streams from your gaming PC.
It is about whether the game can run directly on the headset and still feel good without extra setup.
Valve has also updated the Steamworks Partner Dashboard with new tabs for Steam Machine and Steam Frame, so developers can see test results for the new hardware alongside Steam Deck Verified results.
This is a small developer update on paper, but it is also a strong sign that Valve is preparing its Steam hardware ecosystem for a broader launch. Steam Deck already proved that a compatibility badge can shape buying decisions.
Steam Machine and Steam Frame now need the same thing, because players will want to know what actually works before spending money on new hardware.
