Applied Materials posted record quarterly results for a second consecutive quarter, with artificial-intelligence demand driving strong growth across its semiconductor equipment businesses. The company also forecast another quarterly sales record for the current period, underscoring the resilience of AI-related semiconductor demand.

Applied Materials reported fiscal third-quarter results for the three months through July on August 13. Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) revenue rose 25% from a year earlier to $9.115 billion, the highest quarterly level in the company's history. Revenue increased 15% from the previous quarter's record of $7.91 billion.

Operating profit also surged. Operating income rose 37.7% from a year earlier to $3.075 billion. Non-GAAP operating income, excluding one-time items, was $3.096 billion. The non-GAAP operating margin reached a record 34%, up 1.9 percentage points from the previous quarter and 3.3 percentage points from a year earlier.

Non-GAAP gross margin was 50.4%, improving 1.5 percentage points from a year earlier and marking its 13th consecutive quarter of expansion. Non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) rose 41% from a year earlier to $3.50, also a quarterly record.

Gary Dickerson, Applied Materials' chairman and chief executive officer (CEO), said AI computing is driving semiconductor industry demand at an unprecedented scale, adding that customers are finding new ways to overcome cleanroom space constraints, resulting in a significant increase in demand for equipment deliveries.

◇Semiconductor Systems and Services Businesses Set Records; Packaging Revenue Seen Up 50% This Year

Revenue from the Semiconductor Systems segment, which covers semiconductor equipment, rose 27% from a year earlier and 18% from the previous quarter to $7.04 billion. It marked a record for the second consecutive quarter. Non-GAAP gross margin for the segment reached 55.4%.

Capacity expansions for gate-all-around (GAA) and FinFET processes drove revenue in the foundry and logic businesses. Revenue from dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), including equipment used for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) packaging, jumped 52% from a year earlier.

Applied Materials expects foundry and logic, DRAM and advanced packaging to account for about 80% of global wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) growth over the next two years. In fiscal third quarter 2026, the company launched eight new products, including equipment for epitaxy, chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) and electron-beam inspection.

Applied Materials expects revenue from advanced packaging equipment to rise 70% this year, led by HBM and 3D chiplet stacking. Revenue from its process diagnostics and control (PDC) equipment business is also expected to grow 50% this year, driven by demand for electron-beam solutions capable of high-resolution measurement below 1 nanometer.

Applied Global Services (AGS), which supports equipment optimization and maintenance, posted a record for the sixth consecutive quarter. Revenue rose 22% from a year earlier to $1.781 billion. AGS posted a non-GAAP gross margin of 35.6% and an operating margin of 30.1%. Higher semiconductor fab utilization at customers worldwide boosted demand for consumables, while subscription-based services also grew.

◇EPIC Center Nears Opening; Fourth-Quarter Revenue Forecast at Record

Applied Materials is making major infrastructure investments to prepare for longer-term growth in equipment demand. The company has expanded production facilities, including its recently opened manufacturing center in Singapore, doubling its global manufacturing footprint.

It is also hiring and training 1,500 equipment manufacturing and service employees. By 2028, the company plans to double quarterly equipment production capacity from current levels.

Preparations are nearing completion for Applied Materials' large next-generation research and collaboration complex, the EPIC Center (Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization), under construction in Silicon Valley. Applied Materials plans to install the first research-and-development (R&D) equipment in the center's cleanroom next week and hold its unveiling ceremony on October 12. Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Micron Technology, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Broadcom are among the 11 participants in the EPIC Center.

Applied Materials forecast fiscal fourth-quarter revenue at $10.25 billion, plus or minus $500 million, and non-GAAP EPS at $4.02, plus or minus 20 cents. The revenue forecast forecast represents an increase of about 51% from the same quarter a year earlier, while EPS is expected to rise about 85%. Semiconductor Systems revenue is expected to be about $7.9 billion, while AGS revenue is projected at about $1.84 billion.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Bryce Hill said large customers are providing eight-quarter forward-looking forecasts and long-term, five-year demand information, adding that the increased visibility has significantly improved the stability of the business and that Applied Materials expects to grow again next year.
