Doosan Enerbility will supply key equipment for TerraPower’s next-generation reactor in the US.
Doosan Enerbility said August 14 that it won an order to manufacture key equipment for TerraPower’s Natrium reactor. The company will produce the reactor containment vessel, support structures and internal structures.
Doosan Enerbility signed a contract in December 2024 to review the manufacturability of key equipment for TerraPower’s first reactor unit. It has since completed design improvements and prepared the equipment for manufacturing.
TerraPower is building a 345-megawatt (MW) next-generation nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The project received a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in March and construction has begun. The NRC identifies the project as the Kemmerer Power Station Unit 1 and confirms that it uses TerraPower’s Natrium sodium fast reactor design.
TerraPower’s reactor is a Generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) that uses liquid sodium rather than water as its coolant. When combined with a molten-salt energy storage system, the plant can increase its power output to as much as 500 MW. The NRC describes Natrium as a 345-MWe pool-type sodium fast reactor with an integrated molten-salt energy storage system capable of boosting output to 500 MWe for several hours.
“We will strengthen our small modular reactor (SMR) manufacturing capabilities and expand our role as a global supplier,” said Kim Jong-doo, head of Doosan Enerbility’s Nuclear Business Group.
