Annual Production Capacity Targeted at Two to Three Reactor Vessels

HD Hyundai Chairman Kisun Chung discussed ways to cooperate on the commercialization of land-based reactors with Bill Gates, founder and chairman of TerraPower.

HD Hyundai plans to establish a production system capable of supplying two to three reactor vessels a year for next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs) developed by TerraPower.

HD Hyundai said August 14 that Chung met in Seoul with Gates, TerraPower Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Levesque and Hyundai Engineering & Construction President and CEO Lee Han-woo to discuss cooperation on commercializing sodium reactor technology.

HD Hyundai is working with TerraPower to define the scope of supply-chain cooperation. It plans to invest in production facilities with a target of supplying two to three reactor vessels annually.

HD Hyundai, TerraPower and Hyundai Engineering & Construction signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in May to cooperate on next-generation Natrium reactor projects. TerraPower will provide sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) technology, while HD Hyundai will manufacture major equipment and Hyundai Engineering & Construction will handle engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).

HD Hyundai began its cooperation with TerraPower by investing in the company in 2022. In December 2024, it secured a project to manufacture a cylindrical reactor vessel for TerraPower's Natrium reactor. In March last year, the companies signed a strategic agreement to expand the manufacturing supply chain and review manufacturing feasibility, cost competitiveness and delivery schedules.

HD Hyundai was also selected in May this year as the preferred manufacturer for key components of TerraPower's Natrium reactor.
