Gov. Ned Lamont announced Friday that he’s directing state agencies to help with repairs to the Nathan Hale Homestead after the site was vandalized over the weekend.
Officials said suspects were seen on security footage disabling cameras Sunday night between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The next day, Connecticut Landmarks staff found that the homestead had been broken into, burglarized, and vandalized, according to officials.
The damage extended to the Hale family barns and the barn used by the Coventry Farmers’ Market, which is held weekly.
Officials said that in addition to cash and items stolen from the property, some materials were stripped from appliances and infrastructure.
“The Nathan Hale Homestead is a beloved community gathering spot and historic asset, celebrating the 250th anniversary of its construction this year,” said Robert Brock, Connecticut Landmarks’ Executive Director. “It is disappointing that these acts were undertaken just as a significant restoration project is returning the home to pristine condition.”
Lamont said that the homestead is one of the state’s most “prized historic sites,” and its preservation and continued operation are vital to telling American history.
“I am disappointed to see the damage that occurred this past week, and I’m directing our state agencies to see what we can do to get aid to Connecticut Landmarks so this museum can be restored as quickly as possible, especially as it is preparing celebrations for the historic site’s 250th anniversary this fall,” Lamont said.
Connecticut Landmarks is also raising money to help with repairs.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is urged to contact the Coventry Police Department’s anonymous tips line at 860-742-2400.
