Disney Officially Announces Zootopia 3 & Returning Character

Following the huge success of Zootopia 2, Disney announces that Zootopia 3 is in development and confirms a returning character.

Disney is officially returning to Zootopia.
The animated franchise has become one of Disney's most popular properties and has grown from the original 2016 movie into a larger universe that includes a Disney+ series and the recently released Zootopia 2. The franchise's central duo, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, has remained at the heart of that success, while the sequel introduced a new collection of characters, including Ke Huy Quan's Gary De'Snake.
Now, Disney is already looking toward the next chapter. At D23, the studio confirmed that Zootopia 3 was in development, with Ke Huy Quan's Gary De'Snake and Ginnifer Goodwin's Judy Hopps returning. The first look was also revealed. Check out Disney's announcement:
Gary's return is particularly notable because the character was introduced in Zootopia 2 as a fugitive snake who turns the metropolis upside down, forcing Judy and Nick to investigate a mystery that takes them into new areas of the city. Quan's performance quickly made him one of the sequel's most prominent new additions.
Interestingly, while Ginnifer Goodwin is returning as Judy Hopps, there is currently no word on Jason Bateman returning as Nick Wilde.
That does not necessarily mean Nick will be absent from Zootopia 3. Disney has not announced his involvement yet, making his status one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the new movie. Bateman and Goodwin have voiced Judy and Nick throughout the franchise, with the two characters forming the unlikely partnership that became the emotional core of the original movie and its sequel.
Zootopia originally introduced audiences to a modern metropolis where anthropomorphic animals live alongside one another, following rookie rabbit police officer Judy as she attempts to prove herself in a profession dominated by larger predators and prey. Her unlikely alliance with Nick, a fox who initially makes his living as a con artist, eventually becomes the foundation of the franchise.
The property has since expanded beyond the movies. Zootopia+ premiered on Disney+ in 2022 as a six-episode anthology series, while Disney has also incorporated the franchise into its theme parks, demonstrating how much the studio has invested in the world.
The confirmation of Zootopia 3 also comes after the creative team had already teased their interest in continuing the story. Director Jared Bush and Byron Howard previously discussed the possibility of another installment, with early development reportedly beginning before Disney officially announced the third movie.
The end of Zootopia 2 teased another species of animal: birds. A feather landed on the side of Judy's window and seems to imply that the third installment will be focused on the mystery bird. However, Disney has yet to unveil full plot details and a release date at this time.
For now, Disney is keeping the story details for Zootopia 3 under wraps. That leaves plenty of room for speculation, especially considering how much the franchise has expanded since the first movie.
