A man is fighting for his life after he was struck by debris that fell from scaffolding while he was walking through Center City late Friday morning.
The unidentified man was walking along the 1200 block of Chestnut Street shortly before 11 a.m. Police said debris from scaffolding then fell on top of him.
Witnesses said they saw what looked like a board strike the man in the head. The man fell to the ground and was bleeding, according to the witnesses. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The debris fell from a Drexel University Thomas Kline School of Law building where construction was being done. That work was placed on hold after the incident.
“Immediately following the inquiry, L& I ISC sent inspectors to the site today, and cited the contractor for failure to secure a permit and will be sending an engineer evaluation to resolve the violation. While the scaffold doesn’t require a building permit the work underway does. Typically a scaffold (work platform) doesn’t require a L&I permit, however a shelter platform (pedestrian protection) does. The structure on Chestnut St appears to be a scaffold and we will continue to investigate,” a spokesperson for L&I told NBC10.
Philadelphia police continue to investigate. NBC10 also spotted an insurance claim analyst at the location Friday afternoon.
“Drexel requires that third-party contractors adhere to all pertinent regulations and practices to ensure the safety of workers, building occupants and the general public,” a Drexel spokesperson wrote in a statement. “The university is fully cooperating with the city’s investigation of this matter.”
NBC10 also reached out to Premier Buildings Restoration, the company behind the construction, for comment. We’ll include their statement once we receive one.
