Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau were among the celebrities and politicians seen arriving at Davos this afternoon as European leaders braced themselves for yet more confrontations with Donald Trump. The pop star, 41, and former Canadian PM, 54, were seen walking hand-in-hand at the annual World Economic Forum in Switzerland - an event which is set to be dominated by the presence of the US President. French leader Emmanuel Macron was amongst those speaking at the forum, and in his speech on Tuesday said we are reaching a time of 'instability and imbalance', adding: 'We're shifting to a world without rules.'

He also said that Europe should not hesitate to deploy' tools at its disposal to protect its interests. While Macron did not directly address Donald Trump, he noted that 2025 had been plagued by dozens of wars, saying: 'I hear some of them have been settled. We do prefer respect to bullies'. This comes as earlier today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen‌blasted President Trump for threatening to hit EU allies with tariffs over Greenland. Von der Leyen said the new tariffs would risk 'plunging Europe into a downward spiral' and play into the hands of foreign adversaries, such as China and Russia.

She vowed to 'build a new form of European independence' out of the geopolitical row - which will come to a head once Trump arrives in Davos to meet his European counterparts. She was responding to Trump's announcement that starting February, a 10 per cent import tax will be imposed goods from eight European nations that have rallied around Denmark in the wake of his stepped up calls for the United States to take over the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland. Overnight Trump trolled European leaders with an AI image of them looking at a map showing Greenland and Canada as US territory in the Oval Office.

The photo, posted on the President's Truth Social platform, showed leaders including Sir Keir Starmer, France's Macron and Italy's Giorgia Meloni gathered around Trump's desk. Trump also posted a text exchange he shared with the Secretary General of Nato, Mark Rutte, during which the official wrote: 'I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can't wait to see you. Yours, Mark.' The altered image appears to be an edited version of a photograph taken during August 2025, when European leaders visited Washington for the US President's phone call with Vladimir Putin. In the original version of the image, the leaders are gathered near a whiteboard, showing a map depicting the front line of the Ukraine conflict.

In the altered one, the presentation board has been edited so that a US flag covers North America, Canada and Greenland. Von der Leyen's speech arrived as European allies weigh up whether to deploy their so-called trade 'bazooka' for the first time in retaliation to Trump's threats - an economic tool that would hit the US with £81 billion in tariffs. Trump has in recent days ramped up pressure on his European allies to accept his plans to seize Greenland, contributing towards an increasingly acrimonious trans-Atlantic row. He wrote on Truth Social on Sunday: 'NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that "you have to get Russian threat away from Greenland". Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!'

Protests erupt in Zurich ahead of Trump’s Davos visit

Trump is expected to arrive on Wednesday to the Swiss mountain resort, where he is due to deliver a special address. Last night, anti-Trump protesters rocked Zurich, burning US flags and targeting American-owned stores ahead of his arrival in Davos. Companies affected included luxury car brand Cadillac as well as international corporation Nestlé. A casino was also spray painted with the words 'Money Stinks,' according to local media. Video footage from the evening shows demonstrators building barricades and causing destruction, with bins set on fire and chairs scattered through the area. Masked protesters were also filmed setting fire to a large US flag in the middle of the street.

During the march, which began at town square Bürkliplatz, people carried anti-Trump signs with the slogans 'Trump not welcome, 'Trump for prison,' and 'Trump is a criminal' amongst others. 'One Solution – Revolution!' was chanted as people set off firecrackers, smoke grenades and fireworks. As the demonstration turned aggressive, the police got involved and told marchers to clear the area after protesters sat down on the street creating a blockade. When a second request, as well as dialogue with the demonstrators, was unsuccessful, officers deployed water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Medics revealed several people were injured.

Damon and Beckham Arrive In Davos

Two police officers were also reportedly hit by stones. Actor Matt Damon and David Beckham were amongst celebrities making an appearance at Davos. Damon, who leads a water access nonprofit, is at the forum to recruit corporate partners. Beckham is at the conference in his capacity as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and as a partner of Authentic Brands Group and co-owner of Inter Miami CF.
